You’ll also get hands-on in a practical equine limb dissection, examining the structures that enable high-speed movement in athletes such as racehorses. Animal Management: Calf Health Check Calves are extremely vulnerable in the first few weeks of life. Regular health checks to ensure all is as it should be are essential. During this session you’ll meet our Hartpury calves, as we introduce you to the health checking methods that we use. You’ll get hands-on with visual, physical and physiological health check scoring. You’ll also use thermal imaging cameras to measure stress and health differences between individual calves, discussing implications. 12.00 Lunch A sandwich packed lunch will be provided. The global market is growing rapidly. We are also developing ourselves as a centre of excellence for animal training, welfare and performance. Our research and practice is just the start and this is where you can play a part. Zoology: Solving Prickly Problems The population of Britain’s favourite mammal, the hedgehog, has declined by 25% in the last 10 years. With the help of our resident hedgehog expert and lecturer, you’ll examine this problem in more detail. You’ll then do your own surveying, using a range of techniques to discover their whereabouts on our campus. They are hard to find though, so bring waterproofs and warm clothing. Human-Animal Interaction: The good and bad The rise of animal-assisted Interventions can be beneficial in the rehabilitation and care of people with physical and mental issues. But what are the effects on species? You will observe different animals in our collection and consider how they might be used to assist humans. You’ll then explore the positive and negative impact of different interventions and how these can be alleviated. Animal Behaviour and Welfare: Getting it right With over 70 species on site, ensuring the welfare of our animals is a big job. In this session, you’ll discover how new technology can support us to make decisions to ensure the maximum health and wellbeing of different species from our animal collection. Examine how grimace scales, infrared thermography and behavioural observations are used to gain essential insights into animal welfare. Bioveterinary Science and Animal Therapy: Can we Predict Injury? We see many limb issues in dogs and horses in our Hartpury animal therapy centres.
