Prior to the Great War he held a commission in the Territorials and enlisted at the outbreak of the war with the Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to the 1st East Anglian Field Ambulance, serving throughout the Gallipoli Campaign with the 29th Division. He was later transferred to France and worked in the Casualty Clearing Zone, first as an anaesthetist and then as a surgeon, reaching Captain’s rank. After the war ended, he continued in general practice at Leiston and then Holbrook, where he became Medical Officer to the village’s Royal Naval Hospital. He died in March 1937, aged 54. Ella never married, and lived with her sister in Beaconsfield. She kept all of Bertie’s letters in a Victorian writing case in the attic, where they were found, over 100 years after they were first written. archive Over the last few years we have received a tremendous number of photographs, school records and memorabilia for the Archive and we are so grateful for your wonderful donations.
