Which breads are healthiest? It’s hard to know what’s best for your family.

Wholemeal Bread - Most packaged wholemeal is made by recombining white flour with the bran and wheatgerm is removed during milling. This creates a longer-lasting flour but doesn’t provide the same nutritional balance. Wholemeal bread has more fibre, vitamins and minerals than white, plus it’s fortified with iodine and folic acid. Wholemeal bread is faster to digest and has a higher GI than wholegrain. Fibre: a healthy 2g per slice. WholegrainBread is white bread with grains mixed in, wholegrain has grains (and often seeds) added to wholemeal flour for extra nutritional value. Wholegrain breads have up to four times the fibre of white breads, making them

High-fibreWhiteBread with added fibre from legumes, has more benefits than white bread, but lacks the full range of vitamins and minerals of wholemeal. Some high-fibre loaves have added omega-3 fats – useful for those who don’t eat fish – so check the label. Fibre: generally 2g per slice. WholegrainSourdough - Sourdough rises for up to 18 hours, giving it more flavour and a low GI. Vitamins, minerals and fibre levels vary depending on the flour – wholegrain sourdough wins across the bread board from nutritionists. Some loaves labelled sourdough are artificially flavoured. Always check the label. Fibre: varies from 1 to 4.5g per slice.

one of the healthiest options. Wholegrain breads are low GI because the seeds and grains take longer to digest. This is good for lunchtime sandwiches, as the slow release of energy keeps you full for longer. Soy and linseed adds good omega-3 fats to the mix, too. Fibre: varies from 1.5 to 4.5g per slice. WholegrainRyeBread has a heavier texture than other breads due to the lower gluten content. Light rye, made from rye and wheat flours, comes in halfway between white and wholemeal for health, but wholegrain rye, with added grains, comes top for its fibre and vitamin content. People with coeliac disease must avoid all rye bread. Fibre: varies from 1 to 4g per slice.

Editor’s Note...

Dear Readers, As we move into our traditionally warmer season, summer is the time of year to be carefree and enjoy fun activities. Fortunately we live in an area with so many things to do and see, and it really is the simple things in life that makes most of us happy. So many people have to travel to enjoy the natural beauty and activities that Coastal life offers us to enjoy every day. A time to relax, unwind and enjoy all of the deliciously fresh fruits in season to quench our thirst on those long extended hot summer days. Watermelon, cherries, peaches, strawberries, grapes, limes, mangoes…the list goes on. Sitting in the sun and reading a book or watching the ocean with the waves crashing on the shore and forgetting about all of our worries for a while and realising we need to accept the things we cannot change. Allowing our bodies to revitalise, whilst the sunshine is absorbed into our skin to keep us healthy by boosting our much needed Vitamin D and then taking a soothing swim in the cool water. Time to prepare for Christmas andmake our NewYear resolutions, and to enjoy and cherish the time we spend with our family and friends. Trying to make positive plans for the future that ensures you have some quality time that will be all yours. I would like to wish you all peace, happiness and good health for the festive season and coming year. Feeling lucky? Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Swimming is the perfect summer exercise when the mercury rises, what better way to cool off than to take a refreshing dip?

It doesn’t matter whether it’s at the beach, lake or pool, the long sunny days are a perfect excuse to take to the water. But swimming isn’t just fun and a great way to cool down, it’s also very good for your health, and while you’re splashing about, you’re actually doing wonders for your body. So come on in the water’s lovely!

Create your own kitchen D esigning a new kitchen is both an exciting and stressful time so do your research and make sure you have a clear design that will work for your house. Ensure there is enough space to comfortably move around the kitchen and plenty of storage available. Think about how much bench space you will need and allow for adequate lighting to this work area. When deciding on colours and materials to use, ask yourself if you would still like these choices in 10-15 years, as it might be a while before you get another chance to renovate. Finally, consider what appliances you want to have in the kitchen. Kitchen appliances are an important investment, especially when building a new home or renovating your existing kitchen. With so many different brands, styles, functions and features on the market, finding the right appliances for your kitchen can be a daunting task. Before purchasing your products, consider the layout of your kitchen, desired position of each appliance, colours and sizes. Picture yourself in the new kitchen and think about the most comfortable and functional position for each of the appliances, after all you will have to use them every day.

Love to have shiny healthy looking hair?

L ook at your diet and how this can influence your hair health. Hair is primarily made from protein, in particular keratin and collagen. Therefore, the most important dietary tip for strong healthy hair is to consume protein rich foods. If you are lacking protein in your diet, your hair can appear dry, thin and brittle. Sources: Lean red meats, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, cheese, nuts, tofu, beans & legumes, seeds: chia, sesame, poppy and sunflower. You need a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids as our bodies are unable to make it by itself. When it comes to hair, omega-3s are found in the cells that line the scalp. They are responsible for providing the natural oils that help maintain a healthy scalp and hydrated hair. A lack of omega-3 in the diet can result in a dry itchy scalp, dandruff and dry brittle hair. Sources: Oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, avocado, olive oil, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. On average, hair grows approximately 1/2 an inch (1.3 cm) per month. Hair follicles need a nutrient rich blood supply in order to grow effectively. Iron is key in this. When iron levels are low (anaemia), the nutrient supply to hair follicles are reduced and can result in slow hair growth and hair loss. Adult women (aged 19-50 without any health conditions) are encouraged to consume 18mg of iron per day. Best iron sources: Animal based - Beef, lamb, chicken, salmon, tuna. Plant based - Kidney beans, tofu, green lentils, chickpeas, cooked wholemeal pasta. Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron and as a result improves scalp circulation and hair growth. It also plays a role in the production of collagen which is one of the building blocks of hair. A lack of vitamin C can cause slow hair growth and even cause shedding of the hair. Best vitamin C sources: Plant based - Strawberries, kiwifruit, blackcurrants, blueberries, oranges, papaya, broccoli, red capsicum, sweet potatoes. Biotin or vitamin H is essential for growth and maintaining a healthy metabolism. It plays a role in the body’s production of proteins which can encourage the growth of stronger hair. A lack of biotin in the diet can result in brittle hair and hair loss. Sources: Eggs, salmon, liver, cow’s milk, wholegrains, soy flour, tomatoes, almonds, onions, carrots, sweet potato, cauliflower.

What’s the difference? by Guy Thornycroft

W ho kiss best: the French, Americans or Australians? I can’t answer that but I can shed light on the differences between the French, American, European and even Tasmanian Oaks. French Oak is an imported hardwood from France. Colours range from cream to pale brown, with some slight tones of pink. Tight knots in the grain are a prominent decorative feature. Being slower growing with tighter grain it doesn’t expand and contract to any great extent. French Oak trees produce long lengths and wide width planks. Quercus Petraea and Quercus Robur are the two types of white oak grown in France. Of the two Quercus Petraea is considered the finer. The most important oak forests in France are Allier, Nevers and Tronçais (all in central France). European Oak comes from any Oak tree, anywhere in Europe. The age and species of the Oak does not matter, as long as it is an Oak from Europe. The source of this timber is not always regulated, meaning that the age of trees, species and parts of the trees used are not so controlled. The processing and grading regulations for European Oak differ between countries and many countries that manufacture using this Oak, purchase their material from a variety of suppliers. The end result is a mixed source in the finished product.

Tasmanian oak (or Australian oak) is not an Oak at all and refers to the hardwood produced by three trees: Eucalyptus regnans, Eucalyptus obliqua or Eucalyptus delegatensis, when it is sourced in Tasmania. The hardwood timber is light-coloured, ranging from straw to light reddish brown and sports less feature than the other ‘Oaks’. Phone us to discuss your flooring needs. Phone 4342 6666

American oak flooring typically has much larger grain and growth rings in its boards and a much lighter tone compared to French Oak Flooring. Due to the amount of different variations there are of American Oak, the boards also tend to have more of a colour variation across them. Quercus Alba is the type of white oak most grown in the United States. It is grown mainly in the eastern states as well as California. American oak is more dense than the European, but less tight grain.

THE EXPERT

By Geoff Garlinge

CANCER –even in themodernhigh-tech age we now live in, the very word still strikes fear into the hearts of multitudes receiving a Cancer diagnosis, or else devastated by news of a loved one or close friend’s dilemma. Everyone knows of someone with Cancer & all our lives are being touched by it one way or another. I too have not been exempt, with my beautiful wife Lynda having been diagnosed with aggressive breast Cancer in 2001... then quickly told that she would certainly die within 2 years if she declined chemo, radiation & Tamoxifen (the drug of choice at that time) for the next 5 years. Though I offered my full support regardless of her decision to accept or reject any treatment as per my standard practice, I was nevertheless ecstatic when of her own volition she bravely chose to take the natural course. Thank God she is still alive & cancer free to date after 16 years to encourage & bless others. The fact is however, that despite much advancement in technology & medical science, along with seemingly never-ending promises of wonder drugs and upgrades to pinpoint transference towards reducing the destruction of healthy tissue etc…still the war against Cancer has in the main failed on a momentous scale. Yet we continually hear of the next supposed new pharmaceutical cure that “should be available within 5years”, only to disappear into the proverbial ether... never to be heard of again. Percentages of success are also fudged using the classic 5 year survival rate model in conjunction with statistics on non-lethal Cancers to create the illusion that the war is being won. Conversely, the reality is that an avalanche of new cases are being confirmed around the clock, many of which will tragically decimate & often actually take away life. As a direct consequence of this epic failure to prioritise and really confront the global disaster of epidemic proportions that Cancer indeed is, people remain the collateral damage as multitudes suffer & die daily. However, there is as always good news & light does shine in the midst of the darkness. Whilst it must be first be stated that no guarantees should or can be made (due to the many variables in the human organism, genetic predisposition, dietary intake, stress in its many forms, environmental factors, and indeed the complex & bizarre nature of cancer itself), many people still do actually defy their terrible prognosis to continue well beyond their supposed expiry date.

Educating & thereby empowering and supporting Cancer patients via employing true Nutraceuticals and authentic supplementation in conjunction with a nutrient rich bio-available dietary intake, is the key to implementing a functional & sustainable lifestyle to realise the potential to make a monumental positive impact on quality of life. Cancer sufferers can even be infused with the motivation to fully live and appreciate every breath as the gift it is with an attitude of gratitude. Though sadly most miss it...this is the secret to really living – with or without Cancer. Having had the privilege of supporting Cancer sufferers for well over 20 years now, I’ve seen so many wonderful cases including those diagnosed with multiple metastases, who have continued to enjoy full productive lives way beyond their supposed premature death sentences. In each & every case, these are wise individuals who embrace sound natural principles based on logic, reason, science, & common sense to receive the balanced direction that enables them to make correct lifestyle choices in order to bring about the best possible outcome. Following is a typical enquiry from the constant stream of Cancer sufferers I encounter daily and subsequently support in the battle moving forward. Q: My husband Bob was diagnosed with aggressive prostate Cancer five years ago. Up until this time he was an active 58 year old running his own business, with a real zest for love & life. Then in accordance with his Specialist’s advice he subsequently had a prostatectomy followed by multiple radiotherapy sessions. This series of events left him incontinent, unable to have sex, and not surprisingly very emotionally drained. Anti-depressants were prescribed, but he bravely declined to take them. Now we are absolutely horrified to hear that his PSA has begun to rise again and secondary Cancer has been identified in 2 places in his spine. The recommendation going forward is hormone treatment. However to be quite honest, after all that’s happened we’re really terrified to undergo any more unnatural therapies. We have done plenty of what we thought was research. In desperation we’ve trawled the net looking for alternatives and are totally confused and over it. Nowyou have been highly recommended to possibly advise us towards taking the natural route. And so

my real question is in my husband’s case is, is there any hope to fight the progression? We understand that you have been helping to support many Cancer sufferers for decades and have extensive experience in this field. If you are able to help, we will be most grateful for any clear direction you can offer. Even though he was a natural sceptic in the beginning, after so many letdowns from the system, I can assure you that Bob is now very open to alternatives and more than willing to go on the natural path. A: I’m always sad to hear such a case as your husband’s and of his terrible disconcerting experience to date. In response to your question, yes there is certainly hope, as well demonstrated by Malcolm G of Mackay Queensland. Malcolm’s prostate Cancer also metastasized into the bones in 2008. Diagnostics then showed no evidence in 2011...and he has been all clear since. Maintaining a strict natural regime including Nutraceuticals, supplements & a 100% natural diet, at 77 Malcolm is now full of energy, cycles hard on a daily basis & even chooses to physically work part time in the family business. It is also noteworthy that his PSA reduced to the degree of being so negligible as to on occasion actually not register any reading whatsoever. As true & wonderful as this is, it must however be stated that as is always the case and especially with metastasised Cancers... no guarantees can be made beyond delivering optimal achievable quality of life (possible via 100% ongoing compliance). I must say your loving dedication is very admirable indeed and your husband is blessed to have you by his side in the battle. When couples pull together in the right direction and support one another it is certainly a tremendous advantage in the fight against Cancer. Real commitment is the love that holds us together through the storms of life and you are blessed to enjoy that in your marriage. As Bob’s primary caregiver, it is imperative that you do keep yourself well in order to cope with the stress & strain that comes with the territory. Be mindful of this as you bestow on him your priceless support. You are welcome to contact me at my office with a view to visit ASAP. FYI appointments are scheduled in evenings only (usually min 2-4hours). There is no charge for my time which I give freely to those in your situation.

Getting a good night’s sleep E xperts suggest the optimumamount of sleep is between 7-8 hours each night, although this varies slightly

from person to person. Sleep is made up of two different phases – REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM sleep. To wake up feeling restored and refreshed, we need to complete these cycles several times each night. A good indicator of how well you’re sleeping is to see how you feel 20 minutes after rising - if you’re still feeling groggy, the chances are your sleep quality is not optimum.

FLEX by Ziera

Achieving good quality sleep involves preparation and dedication. This means switching off your laptop and TV at least an hour before bedtime, doing something relaxing like taking a warm bath or reading a book, and not eating a heavy meal or exercising in the couple of hours before bed. Try to create a pre-bedtime routine so that your body starts to recognise that sleep is on its way! How relaxing is your bedroom? If it’s cluttered and messy, it’s not going to be easy to switch off and clear your mind when you get into bed. The ideal temperature is between 15-20 0 C – and if you suffer from cold feet experts recommend wearing socks to bed! Filter out any light, particularly from electronic equipment and invest in block out blinds – if this isn’t possible, wear an eye mask. Getting into a regular routine of going to bed at roughly the same time each night and waking up at a similar time (even at the weekend) has been shown to dramatically improve sleep quality.

ASK THE SKIN AND COSMETIC EXPERT

Q: I am a woman in my 30’s who spent a lot of time outdoors in my youth and never have taken much care of my skin. I have recently noticed that my skin has started to show signs of ageing with fine lines and dryness. Do you have any treatments that are pain free with quick results? A: We sure do! We have a new third generation microdermabrasion treatment that takes micro- resurfacing to the next level through a unique, customizable treatment approach. It is called DERMASWEEP! It uses a bristle tip, which has three different densities to suit your skin type, that gently lifts away the top layer of skin and increases micro- circulation to enhance lymphatic drainage, oxygenation and the delivery of key nutrients. We then go in with an exclusive infusion, formulated with cutting-edge ingredients added to target specific skin care concerns for visible results in just one treatment! For your specific concern we would do a microdermabrasion using a soft bristled brush then infuse Refresh Peel Fusion that uses 15% TCA with a blend of Glycolic, Salicylic and Hyaluronic acid which is suited for dry, dehydrated skin. You can expect to have a light peel in the next three days post- treatment with the hyaluronic acid giving hydration to the dermis within the skin smoothing out fine lines and making your skin appear tighter, brighter and full of volume! Combinedwith our LED Therapy it’s a perfect treatment for all skin types, colours and textures, guaranteed to “Give you a Glow” this Summer. Our special summer offer for all readers is only $195 (RRP $295) It’s perfect for anyone and it would make a great Christmas gift. Just mention this article when booking. Q: My skin has never been a priority for me, I am now in my late 50’s and have noticed that I have quite a lot of brown spots and damage from the sun, also lines on my upper lips and around my

eyes from my years of being happy and smiling! I also have quite rosy cheeks which I wish to minimize or possibly get rid of. I have seen some great results online but am unsure as to what might work best. Do you have anything to help with overall skin concerns? A: Your issues are very common withpeopleofyouragegroupandwe can certainly help with all of these concerns. We see great results with all of the treatment that we offer. These include a large range of Premium Dermal Fillers, Anti Wrinkle injections, Skin Needling (Collagen Induction Therapy) LED therapy, Factor 4/PRP, Medical Grade Peels/ Product and both non-invasive and invasive Medical Lasering including Laser Genesis, Limelight (IPL Photo Rejuvenation) and our resurfacing Fractional Laser. Our Consultation and Clinical Imaging system allow us to develop a treatment plan best suited to your concerns. Laser is the most favoured treatment in many cases. We use Cutera lasers known as the “’Rolls Royce’” of lasers in the industry, Our Xeo system offers breakthrough laser treatments that stimulates the skin’s natural processes to reverse the signs of aging and sun damage, promoting a vibrant, healthy looking complexion. It works through micro-pulses of laser energy which stimulate collagen remodelling to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles also targeting unwanted brown spots and facial redness. Non- invasive treatments have little or no downtime and are very well tolerated by our clients. You will find even after just one treatment that your skin will appear and feel smoother, with minimal redness, All our treatments stimulate collagen which will smooth out your fine lines, improve your texture and tone and give you a youthful glow! A small gift, even if it’s under $5, will still give you the same rush of happiness as a bigger gift. Meditate- Just 10 minutes a day is all you need. Sit somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and try to focus on the moment. A common approach is to visualise each part of your body relaxing. So start at your toes and work your way up. Listen to calming music -It can really lower your anxiety and stress levels. Write down your thoughts- Write down your goals and aspirations and look at this list every now and then to remind yourself of where you’re going. It’s good to dream and be ambitious so getting a clear view of what you want can really help put things into perspective. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help relieve stress. So don’t hold on to feelings, instead let them out, but if you don’t want to talk about them, a journal is the perfect release.

We develop bad eating habits, bad sleeping habits and feel like the world is caving in on us. Stress affects everyone at some point so it’s important to take control of it. Don’t let stress get the better of you. By doing these simple things each week, you can help to clear your mind, relax and de-stress. Go outside - Getting some fresh air can really help you relax as nature is a well- known mood-booster. Skip the gym and instead go for a run, walk or bike ride in your local park. Many studies have shown that those people who live nearer to green spaces are happier, healthier and live longer. Spend money- Retail Therapy can really put a smile on your face. But the best way to do it is to spend money on someone else. Shopping can make you forget your troubles and purchasing and giving someone a gift that they love is proven to relieve stress and make you feel good.

H ot weather can make anyone feel uncomfortable, and your dog is no exception. Here are some safety concerns for responsible dog owners: • Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle. Heatstroke can occur and lead to brain damage or death. Signs of heatstroke are panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. Immediately immerse the dog in cool water and seek emergency veterinary assistance. • Never leave your dog unattended in a hot, parked car. The inside of a car can heat up in just minutes. Leaving the windows partially rolled down will not help. Your dog is susceptible to heat stroke and possible death in these conditions. • Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water. • All dogs need a collar with an ID tag, along with a microchip. • Avoid strenuous exercise with your dog on extremely hot days and refrain from physical activity when the sun’s heat is intense. BEACH TIPS Taking your dog to the beach can be a great way to spend a summer day. Being a responsible dog owner there are certain precautions you must take: • Provide plenty of fresh water and shade for your dog. • Dogs can get sunburn, especially short- PET - SUMMER SAFETY CONCERNS

haired dogs and ones with pink skin and white hair. Limit your dog’s exposure when the sun is strong, apply sunblock to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside. • Dogs are easy targets for jellyfish and sea lice. • If your dog is out of shape, don’t encourage him to run on the sand. Running on a beach is strenuous exercise, and a dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament.

• Salt and other minerals found in the ocean can damage your dog’s coat. So, when you are ready to leave for the day, rinse him off with fresh water.

What blind is best? Sharon Tieman from Premier Shades at Wyoming, runs

1# What are good “no fuss” tenant blinds? There is a rule of thumb that if the property is well maintained the tenants will look after it. Agents tell me, blinds that are out dated, ripped and torn will not encourage a tenant to look after them. The secret is to choose low fuss fabrics and low fuss operations. There are fabrics around now for Roller Blinds (Holland Blinds) and Vertical blinds that are easy to care for and just wipe clean. If there is a scuff mark or spill, they can be wiped with an eraser or damp cloth. The colour through the 3 biggest questions they get in their showrooms and the best options to solve them...

palette ranges from 5 shades of whites to cream, beiges greys and chocolate browns. Most landlords choose an oatmeal or grey colour to keep marks to a minimum. As far as operation goes, stay away from spring loaded roller blinds if you want low maintenance, as multiple users often grab on the fabric, not on the ring pull and the blind is damaged. Instead, opt for an easy care chain control that is fitted directly to the frame. They can be moved up and down easily and safely with no choking hazard. A simple roller blind can be just as cost effective as a vertical blind, and may be more suitable for bedrooms. Apart from being easy to replace and maintain, Vertical blinds are versatile and very cost effective. If a tenant moves out you can often replace just 1 damaged blade, rather than the whole blind. Avoid having chains on the bottom of vertical blinds. Apart from being a dated look, they have proven to be a choking hazard for small children and pets. If you have existing chains it’s easy to swap themover to chainless weights. Contact a local blind manufacturer (Premier Shades). Expect to pay around $1 per chainless weight. Although custom made blinds are more expensive than off the shelf blinds, it’s a case of “pay cheap, pay twice”. “We get many customers coming into the Showroom after parts or to replace bits off cheap blinds made in China. The parts are not available in Australia” Sharon says. 2#What is the best “block out” blinds? A block out blind fabric blocks 100% of the light coming into the windowwhere the fabric is. There are 100’s to choose from. From white to black, they can all be 100% blockout fabric. What some people don’t realise is there will be a gap on either side of the blinds where the brackets have fixed the blind to the window frame. If you are after total darkness in a bedroom, you may be better off looking at side channels and a cassette system on the roller blind, curtains, or even an external roller shutter. We have successful recommended motorised roller blinds with side channels for shift workers and baby’s rooms that can operate easily with a remote control. It is very difficult to get 100% blockout without some light bleed. It may require 2 blinds, or something inside and out to get the “dark as midnight” effect. 3# What is the best insulation blind? If you are after a block out blind for insulation, then the thicker the fabric the better. Any window coverings you put on your window will make a difference to the temperate of the room. With over 20% of the heat or cold coming through your window, it makes good sense. The latest reports have indicated Quality Plantation Shutters or thick heavy curtains are your best insulation. Whist vertical blinds are probably one of the most versatile blinds, they offer the least insulation compared to other styles of blinds. Don’t be afraid to consider a quality 95% Mesh external window awning

for outside. It can blockout the heat and the glare from the window, but you are not sitting in a dark house in the middle of Summer. Article supplied by Sharon Tieman. Director. Premier Shades. 18/482 Pacific Highway, Wyoming. NSW, 2250. Ph; 0243248800. www.premiershades.com.au
