A word to the Captains from the Captains before... Blake Mills and Katie Plume

To the future Veivers House Captains. The role of which you are about to step into is fun, exciting, full of laughs but also full of decision making and responsibility. The role of a House Captain in broad and official terms is to assist your Head of House to organise and lead the team, but we believe it is so much more than that if you allow it to be. We have found involvement in every aspect of your house leads to much better and well-rounded leadership but also a mutual respect between your peers and yourself. Don’t just support the things you individually are interested in, broaden your horizons and open your mind. Pursue everything with all of your efforts and give everything a try.

F ive tips for you as successors Being in a leadership role in the most challenging schooling year of your life can be very difficult. We have culminated some small, but we hope, useful tips:

• Stay organised. Use a calendar and diary. Make a small start on things straight away.

• Utilise your team mates, share the load. Sometimes it’s too much for one person alone, delegate and get some help.

• Get to know your teachers and Head of House. They are here to support you and are truly incredible people if you are willing to let them in. • Be open minded. Get involved from the sporting field to chess to house debating to choirs. You don’t have to be in everything but to support those that are representing your house is a truly fulfilling experience.

• Be assertive but understanding.

The First week of School – what can you do to help? In your first week of school, it only takes a few simple things to set up your year. • Set up a relationship with your Head of House and organise if you will have meetings and how often. (Exchange Numbers) • Get to know your senior team – this is probably the one we stress the most. They will be your biggest ally and help throughout the year. • Know your other PC’s and PC Tutors. • A small Veivers house matters allocated book. Helps with speeches, lists and keeping things organised. Leadership in PC PC is a very valuable time to set up relationships with students from other year levels. It has allowed us to broaden our horizons from our busy yet often separated Year 12 cohort. Utilise your time being around the young buzzing minds in your PC. As a leader of your house, make sure to spend time to get to know where the other PC’s are and get to know people in them. Make new friends and socialise. It is so love- ly when someone you spoke to about some house matter, smiles and knows your name as you pass them next time. PC is an awesome time to take a breath and recharge. Year 7 Camp The day the Student Leadership Team visits the Year 7 Camp is unreal. We had so much fun this year meeting all the new students in our house and latest additions to the high school Veivers team! We especially loved the Senior Choreographed dance that we perform to the Year 7’s at the end of the night. We all worked together and totally embarrassed ourselves in the process but it made all the difference getting involved and giving it our all. House Play Festival The House plays are an awesome way to show your support even if theatre is not your thing. Going and visiting rehearsals, asking if the directors need anything is a great way to show your support. The culmination on the performing nights would make any house captain proud, if they were involved or not.

Inter-House Carnivals Perceived as the only event you have to organise (this is not true!), However these certainly are a big aspect of work. You will work with your senior team to make sure every member of the house has a role to fulfil on the day of the carnival. Convincing students that have no desire to run 3k or jump in a pool is a challenge, but with the right approach and attitude can be swiftly resolved. We found this is when you must assert yourself but also be understanding. And if you are faced with a difficult situation, this is the time to ask for help to make an informed decision. On the big days, making sure every lane or position if filled is stressful, but with the help from your senior team and Mr Walker’s trusty clip boards it should be a breeze. Service Learning – House Charity The milkshake stall. If you haven’t been involved with this yet, you should because it is so much fun. Veivers House supports the Guide Dogs Queensland Association. This stall, always producing the best $4 choc, vanilla, caramel and strawberry milkshakes money can buy, creates another perfect opportunity to meet people from outside your regular sphere. You will meet people who love milkshakes, people that just need their community and service hours and people who just want to help. But for their reasons, they are there and that must be acknowledged and appreciated.

H ighlight of our C aptaincy Where to begin. The highlight of our captaincy is a few things. Superficially, winning the tug-o-war we organised and trained so hard for. But under all that, it is seeing our team strive for success. Sounds cheesy, but to see someone who didn’t think they could run 3k finish cross-country, or someone who had just learnt to swim, finish the 25m race, to witness someone who just wanted to give it a try and made it into House Plays cast or someone make a milkshake and accomplish a small difference. These are the highlights of being a captain. Watching your peers grow and develop, and if they are struggling, being able to lend a hand, or an ear and a smile. That is why you are a leader. U nexpected things that occurred There were a few. Being in Year 12 is a lot of fun, but it certainly isn’t all a smooth sail. Being in Year 12, along with being on the Student Leadership Team is a lot of responsibility and setting an example for those younger than you to follow. This took us a second to find our groove, but once we did we were back to full speed. We believe another unexpected aspect we found was learning to pick our battles. Deal with things that can be fixed, try not to look at the problems rather try to find the solutions. Find a balance between optimism and pessimism to try and stay as level headed as possible. Often decision making as a house leader means doing what is best for the largest number of people or thinking about the decision that affects an individual the most. Your Head of House is always there to help with the big decisions. On another note, you will come across animosity and difficulties along your path. It is best to be honest, kind and understanding in these situations.

Another challenge is the fact that, even though you are filled with passion, is the honest fact that some people really don’t want to be there or be involved. They have a right to this decision, but a little encouragement has never hurt anyone. We found utilising our senior team to set an example, we all tried to be as involved as possible and this hopefully encouraged others to become involved or at least have a little more enthusiasm.

T hings we will miss most about our house We know the aspect we will miss most about our house is our senior team. We are a really close-knit group of like-minded people, and we think that has made all the difference this year. Running a house is really hard, but having a group of supportive, funny, kind group of individuals makes it so much better. Our senior team was so strong because everyone was included, from the stage, to the chess boards, to the pool and to the track, everyone had a role to play, something to organise or a job to do. We work as a cohesive team and that is probably one of the proudest experiences that we have had as Veivers house captains. Our advice, is to set up the relationship with your senior team early on, your house is your family next year and we hope you can find yours like we have found ours. #bleedblue
