The largest difficulty in this period has been the absence of an Education administrator, over the period 4 September to 2 November. This has impacted upon the administrative effectiveness of the Federation and upon its ability to service the requirements of the TSSA, in particular. GFTU has now appointed an individual to the post who will begin work with GFTU at the end of November, subject to her notice period. The GFTU was represented at the funeral of Mary Turner and condolences were sent from the GFTU General Secretary to both the GMB and Mary’s family. The Kurdish Cultural Festival was a success, and was marked by the launch and sale of Doug Nicholls’ translation of Lugalbanda – The Lover of the Seed. The volume on Trade Union Education – Transforming the World , edited by Mike Seal, has been published via Workable Books and was launched at the TUC Congress. Five Leaves bookshop in Nottingham is now stocking GFTU publications, is keen to have a GFTU presence at the Notts Radical Book Fair, next year, and is looking to publish a book on ‘Why you Should Join a Trade Union’ with GFTU help. This should offer GFTU affiliates an excellent platform and recruiting tool. The GFTU was represented at the annual ASLEF Parliamentary reception, at Westminster, on 12 July.
