Moving times for DavyMarkham’s fabrication department

The space to accommodate the relocated facility was created by carrying out a critical appraisal of the entire main workshop, with two 100m x 20m bays eventually cleared of redundant machine tools. Considerable heavy lifting expertise was needed as machines to be moved included 4m wide Bronx bending rolls (weighing around 200t), a hydraulic press at 120t, eight 25t fabrication assembly beds, and several bending and forming machines at upwards of 10t each. The new facility includes a newly-installed fume extraction system, and new gas lines and tanks. The finished layout of the new department will minimise the movement of heavy fabrications and improve workflow between fabrication and machining bays. DavyMarkham, UK, has recently relocated its entire steel fabrication department from a separate onsite building to its main manufacturing works. The move was a complex task as it involved a range of equipment, including heavy presses, bending and welding machines, CNC profile cutters and heat treatment areas, with the largest machine weighing around 200t.

The relocation took six months to complete and was driven by the commercial objectives of streamlining production, reducing energy consumption and trimming costs. The previous location had been 6,000m 2 and the cost of heating the building was high during winter months, especially with rising energy prices. It was also complex and time consuming when moving heavy fabrications across to the adjacent machining bay for final finishing.

New business division and management change for Kocks

Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG, Germany, has established a new business division called ‘Process, service & consulting (PSC)’, in order to build up and extend its service capabilities. The target of this business division will be to present general process technology of the rolled product up to its differentiated applications. The PSC division will focus the company’s professional and service-oriented duty towards its customers and the preparation of concepts tailored to individual requirements. The new division will also cover services concerning spare part procurement and handling of technical questions. The head of this newly created division will be Mr Dipl-Ing Michael Kruse who has many years of work in the area of mill and plant construction. Mr Kruse has the necessary practical experience as a mill operator in the area of process technology. Kocks has also recently appointed a new managing director for the division of marketing and sales at the company. Mr Pascal Rénevier takes over from Dr-Ing W-Jürgen Ammerling, who has carried out this position with success since 1986. Now aged 67, Dr Ammerling will continue to actively support the company. Kocks is an independent, medium-size, family-owned company that has been specialized in mill construction worldwide for more than 60 years.
