Nokia, Qualcomm and UScellular hit extended-range 5G world record over mmWave
Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and UScellular announced that they have achieved a world record extended range over mmWave of more than 10km utilizing its 5G extended-range millimeter Wave (mmWave) solution on a commercial network. This milestone paves the way to bring extended range 5G service with massive capacity and low latency to even more regions across the U.S., including rural areas. The field trial, which utilized Nokia’s AirScale Baseband and mmWave Radios in the 28 GHz (n261) band, was conducted on UScellular’s commercial network in Grand Island, Nebraska. The companies jointly tested multiple locations with different scenarios, measuring distance, throughput and latency. This milestone was achieved at a world record distance of ~10km with average downlink speeds of ~1 Gbps, and uplink speeds reaching approximately 57Mbps. Additionally, ~750 Mbps downlink speed was recorded at a distance of >11km*. 5G mmWave will help close the “digital divide” and offers extreme capacity throughout rural, suburban, and urban areas. The Future of Adaptive Computing: The Composable Data Center
Salil Raje, EVP and GM Xilinx Data Center Group
Most of us are still meeting with our co-workers via online video conferencing after the paradigm shift caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. You are probably not thinking much of what it takes to stream all the content and feeds from your meetings. But if you’re a data center operator you probably haven’t been getting a lot of sleep over the past year worrying about how to handle the unprecedented pandemic surge in video traffic. Not only that, but data centers these days must handle an explosion of unstructured data from a broad range of workloads like video conferencing, streaming content, online gaming and e-commerce. Many of these applications are very sensitive to latency and are also subject to ever-evolving standards for compression, encryption and database architectures.
This has forced data centers to scale up their infrastructure to meet the performance and latency requirements of a variety of demanding workloads, while at the same time trying to minimize cost and power consumption. That’s proving to be very difficult, and it’s forcing data center operators to rethink their current architecture and explore new configurations that are inherently more scalable and efficient. Currently most data centers have racks with fixed sets of resources, combining SSDs, CPUs and Accelerators in a single server. While this ensures a high bandwidth connection between compute and storage, it is very inefficient in terms of resource utilization, since there’s a fixed ratio of storage and compute in every server. As workloads require a different mix of compute and storage, islands of unused resources are left in each server.
Composable Infrastructure A new architecture is emerging that promises to make a dramatic improvement in resource utilization. It’s known as “composable infrastructure”. Composable infrastructure entails decoupling resources and instead pooling them together and making them accessible from anywhere. Composable infrastructures enable the provisioning of workloads with just the right amount of resources, and rapid reconfiguration via software. A composable architecture with pools of CPUs, SSDS and accelerators that are networked together and controlled by a standards-based provisioning framework promises vastly improved data center resource efficiency. In such an architecture, different workloads might have different compute, storage and acceleration requirements, and those resources
16 l New-Tech Magazine Europe
will be assigned accordingly with no wasted hardware. That all sounds great in theory, but in practice there is one big issue: Latency. The Latency Challenge As you disaggregate resources and move them farther apart you incur more delays and reduced bandwidth due to the network traffic between CPUs and SSDs, or between CPUs and accelerators. Unless you have some way to reduce the network traffic and interconnect the resources in an efficient way, this can be severely limiting. That’s where FPGAs play three major roles in solving the latency challenge: FPGAs act as adaptable accelerators that can be customized for each workload for maximum performance. FPGAs can also bring compute closer to the data, thereby reducing latency and minimizing the required bandwidth. The adaptable, intelligent fabric of FPGAs enables efficient pooling of resources without incurring excessive delays. Adaptable Acceleration The first significant advantage for FPGA-based compute accelerators is dramatically improved performance for workloads that are in high demand these days. In video transcoding use cases for live streaming applications, FPGA solutions typically outperforms x86 CPUs by 30x, which helps data center operators meet the huge increase in the number of simultaneous streams. Another example is in the critical field of genomic sequencing. A recent Xilinx genomics customer found that our FPGA-based accelerator delivered the answer 90 times faster than a CPU, helping medical researchers test DNA samples in a fraction of the time it once took.
Figure 1: Xilinx Alveo SN1000 SmartNIC
Moving Compute Closer to Data The second key advantage for FPGAs in a composable data center is the ability to bring adaptable compute close to the data, whether at rest or in motion. Xilinx FPGAs used in SmartSSD computational storage devices accelerate functions like high speed search, parsing, compression and encryption, which are usually performed by a CPU. This helps offload the CPU for more complex tasks, but also reduces the traffic between the CPU and the SSDs, thereby cutting down on bandwidth consumption and reducing latency. Similarly, our FPGAs are now used in SmartNICs like our new Alveo SN1000 to accelerate data in motion with wire-speed packet processing, compression and crypto services as well as the ability to adapt to custom switching requirements for a particular data center or customer. Intelligent Fabric When you combine an FPGA’s adaptable compute acceleration with low-latency connectivity, you can go a step further in the composable data center. You can assign a compute- heavy workload to a cluster of
accelerators that are interconnected by an adaptable intelligent fabric - creating a high-performance computer on demand. Of course, none of this is possible if you can’t program the compute accelerators, SmartSSDs and SmartNICs with the optimal acceleration algorithms, and then provision them in the right numbers for each workload. For that task, we have built a comprehensive software stack that leverages domain-specific industry frameworks like TensorFlow and FFMPEG, which work in conjunction with our Vitis development platform. We also see a role for higher-level provisioning frameworks like RedFish to help with intelligent resource allocation. Conclusion The promise of the composable data center is an exciting change and Xilinx devices and accelerator cards are key building blocks to this new efficient architecture. With rapid reconfigurability, low latency and a flexible architecture that can adapt to changing workloads, Xilinx is well positioned to be a major player in this evolution.

Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) Enter FRMCS (Future Rail Mobile Communication Systems), which is expected to replace existing GSM-R wireless connectivity technology. FRMCS will utilise 5G mobile technology and will have the ability to transmit, receive and use increasing volumes of data, all geared around sustainable transport. GSM-R equipment is expected to become obsolete by 2030. The International Union of Railways (UIC) sees FRMCS as the vital element to drive the digitalisation of railways, while cellular services will maintain their role in connecting the train to the wayside. FRMCS technology is currently being finalised with first trials due in 2023, and wide-scale deployment targeted between 2025 and 2035. East Coast Microwave, a division on connector distributor, Powell Electronics, specializes in RF/
When you consider rail applications, heavy duty, harsh environment connectors immediately come to mind. Power connectors must be ultra-reliable and rugged enough to withstand high levels of shock and vibration. But increasingly rail and other mass transportation systems also require high speed comms systems, not only to improve the passenger experience but also to allow smart connectivity control and monitoring systems, and even state of the art security systems to ensure passenger and employee safety. In this respect, 5G could become a major driving force, but industry experts are already concerned that 5G alone won’t be enough to meet the future demand for cellular connectivity – a 2019 report from Deutsche Bahn found that the projected data demand was not likely to sufficiently support the demand for 27GHz. That’s the reason behind the development of trackside networks that can deliver very high bandwidth connectivity and low latency.

The company -m which is now supported across Europe from Powell’s European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, focuses on three areas: Wi-Fi for passengers and staff Mobile communication repeater systems Carriage bridging wireless data transmission Wireless networks can be used for a range of applications including on- board ticketing, timetable information and internet for passengers. Multiple antennas per access point provide wireless coverage in the train. The main criteria when selecting antennas are the coverage required in certain parts of the train, and the demand for the latest MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology. surveillance system, they turned to the engineering team at TT electronics for support. Effective transport surveillance systems have been shown to increase passenger security by deterring crime and anti- social behaviour. The installed systems need to remain operational in fluctuating temperatures and during extreme vibration conditions whilst providing instant high-resolution images direct to the driver and storing them. The team at TT electronics was able to meet these design challenges head-on with a flexible product offering that met the exacting standards of the rail industry. The AB Multipole high speed & signal data connector was selected by Petards for its simple yet robust characteristics. The innovative connector features a low fire hazard thermoplastic insulator, which is removable for repositioning and can withstand operational temperatures from-55˚C to +125˚C. The connector’s IP67 rating alongside BSEN61373 Cat 1 Class A shock and vibration classification meant it was the ideal solution for several Petards passenger train upgrade projects in 2011. High-reliability power connectors Glenair is a primary supplier of interconnect components and systems for Trains for Regional Service (TSR) in Italy. Designed and manufactured in cooperation with AnsaldoBreda and Keller, TSRs are double-deck Electric Multiple Unit trains with distributed power, consisting of two MCH motor coaches with driver’s cabs and one or more intermediate motor coaches. The traction unit’s composition can be varied from 3 to 6 motor coaches to maintain constant performance. Two or more traction units can be coupled and remote controlled, up to 12 motor coaches. The installation of the train’s furnishings allows easy modification of the seat layout, and the ability to substitute seats with a baggage compartment, folding seats, or lockers. An IGBT traction inverter is installed in
higher data rates and greater stability of the wireless network. Today, passengers expect much more: telephone coverage without dead spots; internet access using 4G and 5G technology; high data transmission rates; and national and international network coverage. The direct use of mobile communication networks in trains presents a problem since the design of railway carriages tends to cause significant attenuation of radio waves. The installation of repeater systems with the latest LTE technology now makes it possible to provide fast, reliable mobile communications inside the train. Signals are strengthened from the roof antenna using a repeater and distributed to antennas or emitting cables using cables and splitters. East Coast Microwave provides halogen-free RF cables - developed specifically for the rail market – that can include thin, flexible jumper cables for tight radii and low-attenuation feeder cables for larger distances. MIMO technology is available for interior and exterior antennas. Data can also be transmitted between carriages using antennas rather than cables. This results in lower installation and maintenance costs, particularly when retrofitting. Less effort is also required to couple and uncouple the carriage. The signal is often transmitted from carriage to carriage using Wi- Fi standard 802.11 a/n in the 5 GHz frequency band. This is mainly done to avoid problems between the various communication standards within a train. MIMO antennas also allow larger data volumes to be transmitted. Surveillance The development of any CCTV surveillance system demands high quality reliable components matched with superior build quality. This is especially true when the surveillance system is mounted in a challenging passenger train environment. When Petards, the market leader in on-train CCTV solutions secured contracts for their high performance eyeTrain digital
each motor coach. Each of these water- cooled inverters feeds two three-phase asynchronous motors. Furthermore, two static groups (3 kV DC/380 V AC 50 Hz) for auxiliary services, each equipped with a battery charter, are installed on the train. Every TSR is equipped with mechanical disc braking on each axle and regenerative electric braking, with reserve rheostat, on each motor axle. The TSR Train cars manufactured in cooperation by AnsaldoBreda and Keller Glenair’s IRT Series power connectors for the connection of power cables in rolling stock is a critical application. Beyond specific parameters like voltage, current, or watertight sealing, other application requirements must be considered: environment and operating conditions, robustness, handling, and other customer specifications. The IRT connector series is one of the most popular connection systems used around the world, and is able to satisfy all of the common parameters from different railway authorities. Glenair is able to develop customized connectors for specific applications, certifying the products according to your unique requirements. Israeli startup EVR Motors unveils extremely small, lightweight, high performance electric motor based on new topology New-Tech Magazine Group LTD.
Opher Doron, CEO of EVR Motors: "We managed to improve the basic design of the electric motor, which has remained much the same for the last several decades, while maintaining the traditional advantages of radial flux motors" Israeli startup EVR Motors is unveiling an innovative electric motor, based on a new patented topology, which it calls TSRF (Trapezoidal Stator Radial Flux). The company has successfully developed and tested the first prototypes of its lightweight and compact TSRF motor. EVR expects its new motor architecture will be adapted to a wide range of vehicles in cooperation with automotive OEMs and Tier 1s. A production-ready motor is scheduled to be introduced to the global market later this year. According to EVR's tests, the novel
motor is less than half the size and tens of percent lighter than existing state of the art RFPM (Radial Flux Permanent Magnet) motors with similar power. EVR is currently holding discussions with a variety of OEMs, Tier 1s and users in several countries, on conducting demonstrations and developing motors suited to their specific requirements. The company will hold an online demonstration of its novel motor on May 19, as part of the Ecomotion Week 2021 virtual event. The transformation of the industry has put huge pressure on automakers to match the internal combustion engine’s performance and cost with small, lightweight and price competitive motors. “We managed to change the basic design of the electric motor, which has remained much the same for the last several decades, while maintaining
the traditional advantages of the radial flux motors,” said Opher Doron, CEO of EVR Motors. “Our small, lightweight motors will provide vehicle manufacturers with improved performance while increasing installation flexibility and reducing costs.” EVR notes that its patented TSRF motor topology will enable superior power and torque density, as well as reduced production costs. EVR Motors can tailor its TSRF solution to most mobility and industrial applications, from two wheelers to cars and trucks and from Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) to Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). TSRF technology can support a wide range of power and torque outputs, with voltage ranging from 48V to 800V, that are suitable for different power levels and for a wide range of speeds. perform significantly better than conventional RFPM motors at a significantly lower cost. The company notes that the new motor, when offered in low cost, rear- earth free, Ferrite-based versions, outperforms induction motors of a similar price range. EVR has recently conducted tests on a prototype traction motor designed for two- and three-wheel electric vehicles. The air-cooled motor delivered a best-in-class peak power of 17kW, and 40 Nm of torque, from a 2-liter volume, weighing only 9 Kg, far exceeding other small, air cooled radial flux motors. Additional versions of the motor will be tested in the coming months, including versions with different voltages, liquid cooled versions, and Ferrite magnet-based versions. Larger motors suitable for mainstream passenger and commercial vehicles are under development. Up till now, EVR Motors has raised seed funding of $5.5 million from several investors, led by Marius Nacht, one of Israel's leading serial entrepreneurs, tech founders and investors. Teramips Technologies, which funds innovative technical ideas, is another key investor, and additional funding has been received from SIBF (South Israel Bridge Fund VC) and through grants from the Israel Innovation Authority. The company is led by CEO Opher Doron, who in the past held senior positions at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Israel’s largest aerospace firm. In his former role as General Manager of IAI’s Space Division, Doron was responsible for the development, construction, launch, and operation of observation and communication satellites for Israeli and foreign users and led the IAI team in designing and constructing SpaceIL’s Beresheet lunar lander.
