Solid Waste

INFRASTRUCTURE

 Through direct contact with residents, we have doubled our Large Item Pick Up participation rates from an average of 15% / year to 30% since May 2016;  Initiated a pilot program for Large Item Pick Up Services at high rise apartment buildings;  Increased waste collection services to include households within the City’s Agricultural Land Reserve; and  Diverted over 64,500 metric tonnes of

 Achieved significant progression towards completing construction of the Surrey Biofuel facility (85% completion by December 31, 2016);  Hosted six pilot Pop Up Junk Drop events between July and October 2016 with approximately 1,250 tonnes of waste and recycled materials collected and 68% of this waste diverted from landfill. In addition, over 100 tonnes of reusable materials were recovered by non-profit agencies working with the City;

organic waste at curbside, far exceeding the previous forecast.

FUTURE INITIATIVES, GOALS & OBJECTIVES

PUBLIC SAFETY

 Reduce illegal dumping and associated costs by 50% over the next 5 years (Year 3 of 5).

ECONOMIC PROSPERITY & LIVELIHOODS

 Develop and implement a customer self -service portal (or app) for Enhanced Services (user pay). Start with piloting enhanced waste services including:  Cart orders or maintenance requests;  Large Item Pick Up (“LIPU”) requests;  Organic bag liner purchase and delivery;  Cart Cleaning subscription service; and  User pay service for large item/ quantity waste collection (beyond curbside or LIPU service).

 Become the first city in Canada to achieve Zero Waste in the next 7 years; and  Initiate development of Waste Collection Services RFP (for 2019) and piloting related initiatives.
