Florida Keys Tourism Advisory
Officials Urge Keys Businesses to Enforce COVID-19 Mandates.
Preparing for a busy July 4 holiday weekend, Keys officials are asking area businesses, which includes the entire tourism industry, to ensure their customers comply with health directives to help reduce the spread of coronavirus throughout the community. The three primary directives include mandatory facial coverings to be worn in business establishments and other public settings where there is a roof overhead. They are also required to be worn outdoors in the Keys when social distancing of six feet or more is not possible. Social distancing of at least six feet between people is the second protocol, while the final is frequent washing of hands. “Following health directives is a personal responsibility,” said Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi. “But business owners and managers have a responsibility to ensure that their staff and customers are also subscribing to the
rules designed to keep people safe.” Recent rapid increases in COVID- 19 cases around the Keys and the state have officials concerned and they are scrutinizing statistics. Many visitors and residents are not following protocols, Gastesi said, prompting officials to begin considering options that would include suspending business operations. Gastesi said the primary data that “We have a limited number of COVID-19 treatment beds,” Gastesi said. “When those begin to fill up, we have no choice but to reduce, if not eliminate, visitor flow. “We don’t want to close the Keys because we’ve already seen how that devastates the economy,” he said. “The private sector needs to step up efforts to ensure compliance. “That should help avoid another closure,” he said. officials will closely monitor is hospitalizations in the Keys.
