2019 Year 12 IB Extended Essays

1. Introduction My research question aims to address the role of an artist in society, the significance of theatre as an artistic platform and a political tool. My approach to this essay is to investigate the impact ‘spect-acting’ has in creating a strong community of active citizens, whilst focusing on the relevance of the work of Jana Sanskriti in a contemporary Indian context. In response to my research question, this essay will; provide contextual and socio-historical research of Theatre of the Oppressed and its founder Augusto Boal, outline the conventions and techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed, compare the ideals and theory of Jana Sanskriti with Augusto Boal, briefly detail the methodology of Jana Sanskriti and analyse a performance of forum theatre devised by Jana Sanskriti. Creators are always considering their artistic intentions, responsibilities and their overall sense of duty in society. Theatre-makers are no exception to this phenomenon either. As creators, we must be critically aware of our roles as philosophers, educators, politicians, and makers of change. This was an integral value kept by Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal. Boal devised the theory and practice of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO). Like Brecht, Grotowski, and Artaud, Boal experienced the realities of poverty, oppression, and disenfranchisement. (Wellwarth, George) Similarly, through Theatre, he sought to revolt against power monopolies of an Authoritarian government. Using theatre for social change, Boal worked with peasantry and labourer populations all over Latin America, in the 1970s. Theatre of Oppressed became a platform for social, political activism and conflict resolution. Currently, his legacy continues internationally, with organizations and companies in Canada, England, USA, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Italy, and India.
