!l)~CO-U-eJt tlie ~ihJ, of, San !l)kga SETTING The Uni ve rsity of San Diego is an indepe ndent Catho li c in stituti on of hi gher edu cati on. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over– looking Mission Bay. San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The cam– pus is named Alca la Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Span ish vill age near Mad ri d - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the G reeks as Complutum, the vill age was later renamed Al Kala (the Castl e) by the Mos lems. Christians recap– tured the village centuries later and founded a uni versity whose buildings became the in spiration for USD 's architec tural sty le. THE CAMPUS The USO campu s is regarded as one of the most architec turally unique institution s in the country, featuring 18 maj or buildings des igned in an ornamenta l 16th

century Spani sh Renai ssance styl e. Since 1984, USO has completed eleven ma– jor construction and expansion projec ts. A five-story parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was completed in 1998. The 5,000 seat Jenny Crai g Pavilion, USO's new Sports/ Activity Center, is due to open in the fa ll of 2000; and thi s past October was the ground breaking ceremony for the Joan B. Kroc Peace Institute. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fal l of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Admini stration Center. In 1992, the uni versity com– pleted the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information tec hno logy. ACADEMICS USO enroll s more than 6,800 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate deg ree programs. The uni versity 's academi c units include the Co ll ege of Arts and Sciences, and the School s of Business Administra– tion , Education, Law and Nursing . Class size genera lly averages between 18-25 students with the student to teac her ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's fu ll -time faculty ho ld doctorates . In the annu al ratings of the country ' s co ll eges and univers ities, pub li shed by U.S. News & World Reporl, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 sc hoo ls in the nati on.

STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cu ltu ral events, dances, boat cruises, beac h parties , BBQ 's, concerts, comedy ni ghts, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer proj ects such as adu lt literacy tutoring, se ni or citizen out– reach, and hou se building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integra l part of student life at USO with over two- thirds of the USO commu nity partakin g in intramural spo rts. ATHLETICS USO is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and com– petes in 16 intercoll egiate sports on the NCAA Divi sion I leve l. The footba ll team compl eted its sixth season in the Pioneer Football League. Women' s sports include : basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, so ftball , swimming, tennis and vo ll eyba ll. Men's sports include : baseba ll , basketball , crew, cross country, golf, football , soccer and ten– ni s. Since 1990 USO teams ha ve won 7 confere nce championships; made 20 post– season appearances; had 19 Conference Coaches of the Year; 16 Conference Pl aye rs o f · the Yea r; 11 Conference Freshman of the Year; 3 WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Yea r; and 2 1 NCAA All-American s. Thi s past year, Zuzana Lesenarova , a three- time NCAA A ll -American 0 11 the women's tennis team, became the school's first ever national cham– pion by winning th e 1999 NCAA Women's Tennis Sing les Championship. Winner of fi ve of th e last six !TA Grand Slam sing les titles, Zuzana is currently ranked No. I in th e nation for the 1999-2000 season.

DID YOU KNOW ? • The University of San Diego was se– lected by the John Templeton Founda– tion for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Char– acter-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four year accredited un– dergraduate institutions that emphasize character building an integral part of the college experience. Foundation officials made special mention of USD's "Ethics Across the Curriculum," a campus-wide initiative funded with a two-year, $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation. USO is one of eight Cali– fornia colleges and universities named to the honor roll.
