To meet the objective of connecting the two areas, a new corridor was designed to allow direct access to both units. A new set of rated control doors were designed into this added corridor to facilitate ingress and egress from both spaces. By capturing underutilized offices, a new outpatient waiting area was created. This provided privacy from the busy emergency department waiting room. To accommodate the new CT scan machine, an area was identified that not only provided appropriate accessibility but also was in a section of the building that was just one story. This in turn resulted in reducing costs for the hospital since less lead shielding was required. JRS also was able to identify an additional area for a new outpatient cardiology suite through better space utilization in the project area. This cardiac CT suite is also shared by the emergency department further providing increased efficiently and better asset utilization for St. Joseph Hospital.

With only 50 feet separating the outpatient and emergency room entrances, St. Joseph Hospital was looking to gain efficiencies by connecting the two areas for use of CT scanners by the emergency room patients along with seeking to increase efficiencies for inpatient and outpatient registrations. Additionally, they were looking to reconfigure space to account for a new CT scan machine and its associated control room. As JRS approached this project, a critical component was that both the outpatient aka ambulatory section and the emergency room were to remain open during construction. Therefore, careful planning and effective project management were required in order to appropriately phase this project. Maintaining patient and staff circulation was especially critical during the construction phase.
