Cores da Terra
C E R A M I C S
In Ibirataia, in the South of Bahia, Selma Abdon Calheira was born in 1958. At the countryside of Bahia, Selma began to shape her first creations. For years, she experimented and explored the possibilities of clay and painting. She organised workshops, events and meetings with other artists. After 38 years, she now manages the Cores da Terra studio, providing jobs to people from humble origins. Men, women and teenagers from humble origins were patiently educated and professionalized as highly qualified ceramists. The name of the studio “Cores da Terra” was coined by Selma because of her lifelong interest in clay and the experimental use of natural pigments. In 1996, Selma Calheira received the price “Gente que Faz” because of her work with economically disadvantaged people in one of the poorest areas of Brazil. Her dream became true: people can now stay in their area and survive with dignity on their salaries. Their education allows them to be more qualified people and perhaps the destiny of the region now changes. Selma Calheira was invited to exhibit her work at the Carroussel du Louvre
in Paris in 1998, Expo 96 in New York, Bazar annual da ONU in Geneve in 1998 and different other locations and exhibitions.
If it is true that ‘man has been assigned to work and share the Earth’ Selma Abdon Calheira has chosen the right track!

Cá d’Oro
A R T I S T I C G L A S S WO R K S
The skilled craftsmen at Cá d’Oro Glass Studio began producing artistic glass works in the city of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1965. Founder Mario Seguso first studied his craft in Murano, Italy, an island of Venice which is recognized worldwide for its glass artisans and the creation of colorful and unique glass pieces. The Seguso family has been involved in that glass tradition since 1292, and brought that creativity to Brazil in 1954 when Mario Seguso was invited there by Cristais Prado, a glass engraver trained at the Institute of Art of Venice. Seguso was enchanted by Brazil and began producing innovative designs incorporating Brazilian taste, in a small factory in Poços de Caldas. The technique he uses creates the famous pieces through the high heat fusion of materials including sand, calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate. In the large Poços de Caldas factory, skilled artisans strive for perfection in the incandescent masses of glass, which are
molded and blown in an almost magical process, creating eye- catching decorative artistic pieces. In the 1990s Seguso passed along management of the unique factory to his son Adriano, who continues to use the ancient glass manufacturing process. He has now brought in his two sons, Rodrigo and Guilherme, who carry on the centuries-old style of creating the glass masterpieces. The entire Seguso family honors their centuries-old artistic tradition with the creation of new and innovative pieces, now proudly owned by buyers from around the world. Today in Poços de Caldas Cá d’Oro continues to represent the finest of quality, design and artistic excellence in its glass creations.

Working with porcelain is very delicate and it requires time, patience, experience and especially know-how. The pure lines, modern designs and sizes do not make the production an easy task. The strong will of porcelain, the shrinking process and the high baking temperature (1400° C) results in every piece being unique.

Domingos Tótora
WA L L D E S I G N & F O R M S A N D F U N C T I O N S
Domingos Tótora is an unusual Brazilian visual artist who lives and works in the interior of Brazil (Maria da Fé-MG). He produces artworks based on recycled paper kraft. Nature is the inspiration and commitment of his work. Domingos Tótora’s creations embody sustainable ideals with natural materials and reflect organic processes and cycles within a fresh, contemporary context. Driven by a passion for preservation, Tótora draws inspiration from natural landscapes to create a collection of home decor pieces and furniture from natural fibres and pigments. Each design is a reflection of the shapes, forms, textures and hues of nature’s landscapes.
Circular patterns, earth tone finishes mixed by a master craftsman’s hand, these inspiring designs are shown in such unpredictable combinations that they give the status of art to simple pieces for everyday life. In 1998, Domingos brought local artisans together into a cooperative that manufactures his pieces. Through this cooperative, he has helped transform the struggling agrarian based economy into one that thrives on the craftsmanship and skill of local artisans.
Domingos Tótora products are strictly for indoor use.

Studio Alva Design
F O R M S & F U N C T I O N S
ALVA is a furniture and object design studio founded in 2012 by sister and brother Susana Bastos, artist, and Marcelo Alvarenga, architect. Its projects are the result of the meeting of these two visions, the architectural and artistic. In addition to the usual rationality and functionality, its creations explore the unusual, the new features and an expressive materiality. From Minas Gerais, ALVA works - among other materials - with soap stone, a typical material from the state. It is, at the same time, a resistant and soft material, easy to be shaped into many versatile forms, either sculptural or utilitary. Another peculiarity of soap stone is its wide range of color, and because it is a natural material, each piece presents a unique color tone.
ITA collection was inspired by the latin-american indigenous people. The ornaments in brass and hard woods refer to the body accessories their people use. Besides, ITA means ‘stone’ in Tupi- Guarani language. AMORFOS series intended to explore to the extreme the plasticity of soap stone, resulting in a set of sculptures-vases that combines different ratios of masses and voids. BOLA SABAO pots were developed in partnership with designer Tatiana Queiroz, combining pure stone forms and light silhouettes of brass. AOI is another partnership with Tatiana Queiroz, and was created as a set of three vases with distinct and complementary shapes. They work together, as a set, or as individual vases, with or without their cover, as utilitary or ornamental objects.

Örn Þorsteinsson (1948) studied art at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and the Swedish Royal Academy in the late 1970s. Though Þorsteinsson has frequently worked on large pieces, some of his most memorable work are his “Travel pieces”, miniature sculptures made from pliable materials that he carries with him wherever he goes. These pieces are his thoughts made visible, ruminations on the Icelandic landscape and biomorphic fantasies arising from it.

Sofia Speybrouck (1970) started studying to become a ceramist at the ‘Sint Maria Instituut’ in Antwerp, after which she took a 2-year specialist course at the ‘Provinciaal Hoger Instituut voor Kunstonderwijs’ in Hasselt. With these artistic talents, she follows in the footsteps of a long line of artist family members, some of them ceramists as well. In her work, Sofia dissects objects of nature and everyday life until she is left with just the bare essence. That essence is then transposed into a monumental shape through a composition of surfaces, lines and volumes.

Erli Fantini was born in 1944 in Sabará, State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. She graduated in 1971 from the Escola de Belas Artes of UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais) in Belo Horizonte. Under the supervision of Amilcar de Castro, she created drafts of sculptures in the Atelier Núcleo Artístico (Artistic core atelier). Every year during the Festivais de Inverno (artistic and cultural events organised by art schools during winter), she supervised classes in ceramics. She was selected as teacher to organize a ceramics class at the Universidade Federal de Goiás by Funarte Fundação Nacional de Arte (National art foundation). Since 1976, Erli Fantini runs her own atelier. Her works are presented in several collective and individual exhibitions. She is now designing in bronze and steel.

Stonecarving is a mix of creativity, craftsmanship and skills, he explains. His pieces of art arise from ideas that cross his mind, things that happen to him. He also creates “statues with emotions”, custom made sculptures that reflect personal emotions. Carving is “a fight with the stone”. The stone has to be conquered in different ways. In that sense it is a passion, a relaxation, a therapy to put the challenge as high as possible. Working with stone is really demanding. The pieces are mainly made out of Belgian blue stone, Carrara marble and white stone. According to Marc, the best thing about art is that other people can also enjoy it!
