Senior Consulting Editor James D. Henderson is professor of international studies at Coastal Carolina University. He is the author of Conservative Thought in Twentieth Century Latin America: The Ideals of Laureano Gómez (1988; Spanish edition Las ideas de Laureano Gómez published in 1985); When Colombia Bled: A History of the Violence in Tolima (1985; Spanish edition Cuando Colombia se desangró, una historia de la Violencia en metrópoli y provincia , 1984); and coauthor of A Reference Guide to Latin American History (2000) and Ten Notable Women of Latin America (1978).

Mr. Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Centenary College of Louisiana, and a master’s degree in history from the University of Arizona. He then spent three years in the Peace Corps, serving in Colombia, before earning his doctorate in Latin American history in 1972 at Texas Christian University. Charles J. Shields is the author of 20 books for young people. He has degrees in English and history from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Before turning to writing full time, he was chairman of the English and guidance departments at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Illinois. He lives in Homewood, a suburb of Chicago, with his wife, Guadalupe, a former elementary school principal and now an educational consultant to the Chicago Public Schools.
