A New Voice. The class of 2018's letter from the leadership team.

Greetings Fellow LDPers!

We are so excited to introduce ourselves and present our first issue of LDP Connect, the official newsletter of the Leadership Development Program at AT&T. The three of us are serving this year as your Leadership Team because we have some big plans and ideas to connect all LDPs for the 30th year of this incredible program. Our hope is that in the coming months, we provide you with relevant, timely information that makes you feel connected to the program - whether you are the class of 1988 or 2018, or any year between. Expect a lot of pictures, short, easily-digestible stories, and fun updates. Our mission is to create pieces that are informative, but not overwhelming to read among the demands of our daily lives and careers. We sincerely hope you love each edition and that you let us know of any ideas you have as we continue to evolve.

Happy 30th Birthday LDP!

LDP CONNECT TEAM 2018

LEADERSHIP TEAM The Class of 2018 is flipping the script a bit for the newest edition of the LDP newsletter. Gone are the titles of Editors-In-Chief. Enter "Leadership Team." As a cohort, as a part of the overall LDP community, we are all editors, writers, photographers, designers, innovators, believers, creators and beyond. The "Leadership Team" is tasked with guiding initiatives and empowering all members of the LDP community at AT&T to share their stories, push the boundaries of today and create for tomorrow. The LDP Connect Leadership Team is here to make that happen. It's because of YOU that we have this newsletter.

THE "SOMETHING INTERACTIVE" INITIATIVE

Given our LDP Connect Committee’s broader goal of building deeper connections across the current (and past) classes, we’re exciting to introduce “ Connect Conversations. ”   These will be optional bi-monthly telepresence get-togethers (during the last week of the month) kicking off after the new year.  For those that would like to participate, feel free to vote for the below topic .  Once selected, each LDP on the call can have the floor for 1-3 minutes to share something cool they pulled together on it with the rest of the group, with the main objective being some fun face-time with one another.

WE NEED TO HEAR YOUR OPINIONS ON THIS ONE...

VOTE FOR THE TOPIC YOU WANT:

Topic #1: Autonomous cars in the news Topic #2: Cool new tech product in the news Topic #3 : Movie or TV show recommendations Topic #4: Place you’ve visited in the last couple of years and differences you noticed from your home city Topic #5: Virtual reality in the news

Andrew Petillo, Class of 2018

Rasesh Patel started on the DIRECTV side of our business and has been a key leader with their integration with AT&T’s over the last three years. Within his current group, their primary focus is changing the way customers interact with us and improving our ability to compete within the ever-evolving “Amazon economy.”  They’ve made great strides in shortening new customer wait times from 50 minutes to just three, and are innovating in mobilizing the retail experience (a la Starbucks) so that we’re present in even more places that are customers with purchase intent are.  They’re also putting significant thought into creative ways that we can increasingly leverage our new WarnerMedia assets to build unique engagement opportunities within the digital shopping and in-store environments.   Rasesh encouraged us to “ask tough questions about what our processes could be” and “give everyone other than yourself credit” when working as part of a team.  During our careers it is important to “have confidence that you can be successful in any environment,” through surrounding yourself with others that fill your personal skill gaps and learning by doing.

ENQUIRE TODAY "Give everyone other than yourself credit."

Ray challenged all of us to make the right data-driven decisions by moving away from point estimate goals towards statistically bound goals. In other words, don’t make a short-sighted decision to hit $538M NPV if a better business decision for the future only reaches $535M NPV on that project. In answering one of the questions, he also left us with an important leadership tip: “It’s easy to use slides, but you need to execute.”

Ray Carpenter works at one of the newest and fastest-growing businesses within AT&T. With the acquisition of AppNexus, Xandr is well-positioned to capture the expanding addressable advertising market. Having already built out deals with Altice USA and Frontier Communications, they’ve seen double- digit revenue growth and are on target for their goals, which he says are statistically bound instead of point estimates.

AN AT&T JOURNEY WITH DAHNA HULL Adapting and flexing to new career opportunities for 23 years.

Ask Yourself: How many times have you moved in your life?  BY ALY SHER I DAN , CLASS OF 20 1 8

To get a sense of her geographic journey, I created the featured map above. The markers in orange indicate places she has moved to three or more times (San Antonio), blue is a location she has moved to twice (Dallas, Atlanta) and orange for a location she moved to once (Midland, Zurich, Redmond, Austin. ) A J O U R N E Y A C R O S S T H E WO R L D

For Dahna Hull, SVP Human Resources & CLO, the answer is 11 times over 23 years in her career at AT&T..

Joining the company as an LDP in June 1995, Dahna began her career in Marketing and Public Relations in Midland, TX. At the kick-off of the L1VE Conference, Dahna described her AT&T journey from Redmond, WA to various cities in Texas, and even to Zurich, Switzerland.. Within these placements she touched a wide range of functions including Finance, Strategic Planning, Consumer Marketing, and AT&T University Operations, to name a few.

VOL . 1 0 , I S SUE 1

To get a sense of her geographic journey, I created the featured map above. The markers in orange indicate places she has moved to three or more times (San Antonio), blue is a location she has moved to twice (Dallas, Atlanta) and orange for a location she moved to once (Midland, Zurich, Redmond, Austin.) Her message about all these moves is that she has always remained open minded about her opportunities at AT&T and has gone wherever the company has had the occasion to take her. This map is a visual representation of that commitment. She told the audience, “Be willing to say ‘yes’ enthusiastically and do not be afraid.”  For many new LDPs such as myself, this was inspiring to hear as we embark on our career journeys and begin to think about how open we are to all the chances presented to us. If you got the call to move to Europe to launch a new product like Dahna did, would you? Another piece of advice that stuck with many in the audience... Was Dahna's recommendation to always be kind to others. “Take the time for small acts of kindness for other people” said Dahna as she showed on the presentation screen personal, handwritten notes from Randall Stephenson she had received throughout her career. She has adopted that practice herself as a leader and there are dozens of posts on Twitter made by recipients of her kind notes that testify to this practice. To get more of a sense of Dahna herself, turn to Twitter (@dahnahull). Her feed is filled with exciting news about AT&T and relevant issues such as women in tech. Dahna’s feed also shows her avidness for retweeting her team’s Tweets as well as many  from others inside and outside the company who have been positively affected by her.

“Be willing to take risks. Be willing to say ‘yes’ enthusiastically and do not be afraid.”.

Take the time for small acts of kindness for other people.”

Dahna’s legacy is even felt in the AT&T eStore, where you can buy the “Dahna Shirt”, a professional yet classic button up designed for women at an affordable price. I’ve felt it, ladies, it is so soft! I am so honored to call myself an LDP and continue down the path leaders like Dahna have paved for us. Thank you Dahna, for all you do!
