The Manor Preparatory School Joining The Manor at seven –make the change

AS many parents ask them- selves the big question whether to move their daugh- ters at age seven or 11, The Manor Prep School in Abing- don has a few answers to the question. The Manor warmly welcomes girls aged seven at this point in their education and here’s why. If you are thinking of the inde- pendent sector at senior school level, joining The Manor in Year 3 (age seven) will give you a head start, the opportunity to progress to the top of your Prep School, before going back to being the youngest. One of the great strengths of The Manor is its ability to help girls and their parents find the right senior school. All parents want happy children, thriving in an environment that suits them. Starting that independent jour- ney in Year 3 eases the transition. At The Manor, in Years 5 and 6 the form teachers provide a secure pastoral base, with an increased number of specialist subject teachers, to help the girls prepare for life in senior school. In Year 5, girls are thoroughly prepared for entrance examina- tions, both academically and mentally, while having the oppor- tunity to enjoy the phenomenal breadth of opportunity that is available to them; no less than 90 different opportunities each week to take part in extra-curricular activities. Abingdon and Oxfordshire are lucky to have a wealth of excel-

three Manor minibuses and a full network of coaches, shared with Abingdon School and the School of St Helen and St Katharine. Routes are many and varied and bus stops plentiful. This, together with a range of before and after school options at The Manor, commencing with Breakfast Club at 7.30am to clubs and Extended Day up to 6pm each day, means that school and work can be coordinated, ensur- ing a wide access to many activi- ties for pupils and a longer work- ing day for parents. Feel free to call for an informal chat if you are considering this option for your daughter. The Director of Admissions and Communications, Mrs Karen Copson, would love to hear from you on (01235) 858462 or admissions@manorprep.org.

The Manor has a wonderful track record of attaining places, academic scholarships, music, art, DT and sports awards at schools including The School of St Helen and St Katharine, Head- ington, Oxford High, Our Lady’s Abingdon, Wycombe Abbey and Downe House. The wonderfully diverse journey from Year 3 to Year 6 culminates in a memorable final year at The Manor; an ambitious drama production, trips to art galleries, a residential visit to France, a theatre trip to Stratford, sporting challenges galore, and they still fit in time for work. It is even easier to access The Manor since the introduction of

Students with an interest in drama can take part in major senior school productions, or develop animation, film and documentary skills through the school’s renowned Film Unit. AS a sixth form student at Abingdon, there’s a lot more to life than A Levels. Abingdon provides a stellar academic education, but believes just as much in the importance of broadening horizons and preparing for life beyond school. The school has specialist career advisors, a university applica- tions team and a wide range of initiatives to help students decide on their next step, includ- ing funding for travel plans, workplace internships and plenty of opportunities to study interests outside of A-Level spec- ifications. Sixth formers are encouraged to take on responsibility, to think for themselves and to develop as independent learners in preparation for moving on. The Abingdon staff appreciate that this doesn’t happen overnight and some students take longer than others so they manage the process, giving increased responsibility and freedom to boys as they earn it through their lower sixth year. Students are encouraged to take up leadership opportunities, both within school and through activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and CCF. They can sail, canoe or walk expeditions as part of DofE; the school’s CCF cadets are recog-

The majority of students get to their first choice of university, usually Russell Group, and 10-15 per cent receive offers from Oxford and Cambridge each year. The range of subjects they study reflects the diverse nature of the sixth formers. Recently boys who have not chosen to follow the university path have opted to study music at the Royal Academy, Drama at RADA or pursue sporting careers. Each year a number of students will go to university abroad, particularly the USA, and the school has specialist advisors to provide guidance in these appli- cations. St Helen & St Katharine A rich and rewarding education

ST HELEN and St Katharine is a school where success is celebrated but not revered. Pupils achieve excellent academic results and the school’s goal is to ensure that every girl achieves success as she defines it, so that she can believe in herself, her talents and abilities, and so that she will feel prepared and equipped for life beyond school. Eager to learn, and motivated to do their best, pupils take advan- tage of the many opportunities on offer. The school encourages them to challenge themselves and to take risks, both academically and beyond the classroom, and is also committed to creating a secure and supportive environment in which girls feel they can make mistakes as they learn. Junior Department In the Junior Department, Year 5 and Year 6 girls can explore, discover, achieve and reflect. A friendly, happy and vibrant place to learn, buzzing with activity and positive energy, this is an ideal environment in which pupils are nurtured and supported to find out what they like to do, what they are good at and to find the best way forward. The Junior Department is nestled in the heart of the school. The specialist, experienced and inspirational teaching and support team devotes time to getting to know all the pupils. Individuality is cherished and

celebrated and knowing every girl’s strengths and potential, recognising what delights and motivates her, helps the team to adapt learning to extend and inspire pupils to enable them to become an independent, confi- dent, highly engaged, inquisitive and enthusiastic learner. Lower School When Year 7 pupils join, the staff make sure that they feel happy, secure and confident in their new environment, so that they settle quickly, form friendships, learn successfully and develop fully their individual talents. Getting to know each girl before she joins is important; during the summer term, the Lower School tutor team visit the girls in their primary schools and invite them to an activity day, where they meet their tutor and form group. Girls in all year groups are organised into one of four houses, for inter-house competi- tions and social activities. Houses are led by staff heads of house and offer leadership roles to girls as house captains in the sixth form and house leaders in other years. The house system offers opportu- nities for girls from different years to spend more time together, develop skills such as teamwork and leadership and foster a sense of competition throughout the school. Lastly, and most importantly, they are fun.

ment and good communication are all of fundamental impor- tance during these three formative years and the school is proud of its tutoring system that enables staff to take an all- round approach to a pupil’s progress. Sixth Form The Sixth Form is an exciting and formative experience, a point of transition and transfor- mation from teenage to adult life. The vision for St Helen’s sixth form is to create an environment for students that will spark their

intellectual spirit and imagina- tion. Teaching staff foster a curiosity about ideas and a encourage a willingness to take risks within a culture that nurtures self-esteem and recognises endeavour along- side outcome. It is of huge social importance that young women have the personal and intellectual confi- dence to play a leading role in the complex world of the 21st century, where opportunities and possibilities abound, yet deter- mination, self-reliance and

Middle School The Middle School comprises Years 9-11. On entry into Middle School, girls are rearranged into four new tutor groups in which they stay for the three years. The school welcomes a number of new entrants at this stage who are integrated into the newly- formed groups. This is a time of significant development. A sound understanding of the personal ups and downs in a girl’s life, support, encourage-

resilience are a prerequisite. The school’s expertise is in work- ing with aspirational young women providing the environ- ment and space for them to excel and develop the necessary skills and self-assurance to prepare them for life beyond school. Rookwood School

ROOKWOOD is a co-educa- tional school offering day and boarding for three -16 year olds in the heart of Andover. The school prides itself on its warm, friendly and nurturing atmosphere and its commitment to treating each child as an indi- vidual. While it is non-selective, Rook- wood still achieves excellent academic success; high quality teaching coupled with motivated, positive pupils ensures pupils really do fulfil their potential. In 2016, 100 per cent of pupils achieved five or more GCSE grades A*– C. However, Rookwood school is so much more than exam results; pupils have many opportunities to experience a broader educa- tion than is simply presented on the timetable. School life is rich in experiences and ensures that students have a varied and balanced education that not only focuses on academic achievement, but also on personal development. Across the school, pupils benefit from high quality teaching, excellent facilities and small classes. The favourable teacher-pupil ratio ensures that pupils receive individual attention and that teaching can be tailored to meet the needs of all children. The staff ’s commitment to high quality pastoral care, excellent teaching and superb opportuni- ties ensures that all pupils leave Rookwood School as confident, resilient and principled young adults, ready for the next stage of their education.

St Joseph’s College ST Joseph’s College is an independent day school for boys and girls aged three to 18,

With this in mind, St Joseph’ s has created its mission and aims around four key attributes: commitment, collaboration, confidence and communication. Each one is a thread that runs through each child’s spiritual, academic, pastoral and extra- curricular education, aiming to nurture skills that will serve them throughout their lives. There is a strong focus on lifelong learning, rather than just provid- ing pupils with the skills to get into university. Pupils love going to school at St Joseph’s, and a regular parent and pupil satisfaction survey reflects this. This is what makes St Joseph’ s a unique place. It is a school where each pupil is known as an individual, and will be prepared for adult life, with the academic results and life skills that will allow them to shine. This is the true measure of St Joseph’s success.

situated in central Reading. It has recently won an award for outstanding progress, and has been named Independent School of the Year, with judges comment- ing on its‘trailblazing approach’ to developing the school. Receiving such an award is a huge honour for any school, but especially St Joseph’ s College, which has been on an amazing journey over the last few years. The award recognises the trans- formation of St Joseph’s from a girls school with just over 300 pupils in 2010 to a co-educational school of more than 500 pupils today, with an equal number of boys and girls. During this period the school has cut senior fees by 17 per cent– fees are now significantly lower than other local independent schools. St Joseph’s is delighted to be able to make independent education

more affordable and available to a greater number of children. The college has also implemented a campus-wide investment programme, and this is ongoing as all aspects of the buildings and grounds have been updated, including the dining hall, swim- ming pool, classrooms, new astro- turf pitches and common areas. It offers a holiday club for pupils from age three, and a school minibus from a number of areas, including Thatcham. However, more important than the award and developments is the desire to create a school where each pupil is happy.

The school is proud of its ISI- rated ‘excellent’ boarding house, which provides boarding for pupils from Year 4 upwards. The boarding house is led by experienced house parents who provide the highest quality of care to pupils around the clock. The school has a Christian ethos, though children of all or no faiths are welcome. Rookwood is underpinned by the core human values common to so many faiths; these are rein- forced through assemblies and

through the day-to-day life of the school. Pupils are taught to value and respect each other, to act with integrity and strive for excel- lence in all that they do. They are encouraged to think of others and to be part of a mutu- ally dependent community. These values provide the back- drop against which school life is experienced. THE Cedars School is a delightful, independent day school for boys and girls from four to 11 years old with an Outstanding Ofsted report. Small classes and a tailored education mean that the school is able to offer both support and opportunities for children of all strengths and abilities. With limited spaces available, the school already has a waiting list for Reception children in September 2017, and just a few spaces available in other academic years. Over the coming months, the whole school has a range of exciting trips and visits to look forward to, including canoeing at The Dolphin Centre in Pang- bourne, seeing Stick Men at The Haymarket Theatre, and a full school trip to The Corn Exchange for the annual pantomime. The Cedars also offers an array of extracurricular activities including Lego, crafts, Judo and Latin. Children achieve high academic standards and sporting success, as well as learning about key values in life with emphasis put on health, the environment, social skills and helping others. The Cedars has a long-standing relationship with Treloars, a school for the handicapped, and children raise money through- out the year to support Treloars as well as visiting them and spending time around those whose lives are more challeng- ing than their own.

On the music front, the Music Festival in the spring term was amazing with more than 150 performances and visiting judges from Abingdon and Monkton Combe senior schools. In the summer term, the clarinet ensemble played at the Highclere Church Fete, the Junior Choir sang outside St. Nicolas Church in Newbury on Father’s Day and a combined Thorngrove choir sang in a joint concert with the Andover Light Orchestra to commemorate the Battle of the Somme. To top it all the summer concert was a musical extravaganza, which included an amazing compilation of songs from the West End hit musical Les Miser- ables , with a huge French flag waving in the background. In Year 8, Leo Garrett was awarded a music exhibition to Bradfield College and James Daly was awarded a music schol- arship to Abingdon School. On the drama front, the Upper School play, Spoo-Quay was enjoyed by children and parents alike. It was superbly acted and the clever animation on the back- ground only added to the overall spectacle.

The final dance involving the two main actors was moving and beautiful. The Middle School stunned an appreciative audience with their take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth . Children in Years 3 to 5 worked with two professional actors from the Young Shakespeare Company to produce the most gruesome and murderous show- case in less than a week. Not to be outdone, the Lower School’s summer show Tatty- bogle ’ was a colourful, clever and creative performance. THORNGROVE School stands out from the crowd for a number of reasons. Everywhere you look, the chil- dren are happy, having fun in their lessons and actively engaged in their learning. It is clear that the teachers really do love teaching the children and lessons are exciting, fun and inspirational. The grounds are quite magical, beautifully kept and the best place to explore, have fun and be active in sport and play. Mr King, the Headmaster, who has been at the school for 12 years, believes that having fun is the key to learning. He is also keen to support every child’s wellbeing and the school is currently investing in an extensive programme to teach Mindfulness. On the sports front, for the first time in the school’s history the 1st XI hockey team were Berk- shire County Champions beating Lambrook, Eagle House and St. Andrew’s and were the South of England Plate runners-up. In the same term, the boys were also placed 6th in the National IAPS Basketball Championships. In the summer term, athletics came to the fore. The school had five Hampshire County finalists. Three pupils were crowned District Champi- ons at the West Surrey Prep Schools Championships and Alex Price and Millie Quain-

with many scholarships won. The 30 pupils from last term’s Year 8 will be joining 11 diferent senior schools, having won 14 awards. St Andrew’s is referred to in The Tatler and Good Schools Guides as: “a little gem, a diamond of a school that no one knows about. “St Andrew’s have been British Schools Orienteering Associa- tion champions for three consec- utive years, started an intellec- tual-character initiative to promote positive thinking and is the first Prep school to start Young Enterprise. “A small, family school that is a big player in a wide selection of sports and the music is first class.” Headmaster Mr Jonathan Bartlett would like to invite you to visit his thriving school, where chil- dren can be children with enough time in their day to explore the grounds through play and where high standards are achieved in a low-pressured environment. Please contact the Registrar to arrange an appointment, admin @standrewspangbourne.co.uk.

The teaching team is dedicated to encouraging all the children to reach their full potential so they grow into well-rounded, confident and independent learners ready for the move into the prep school. The Pre-Prep and Nursery are based in their own buildings opposite the main school, giving the children the benefit of their own working environment and the ability to use the school’ s wider facilities. Learning and playing outdoors also plays an important part of life at St Andrew’s, so all the pupils make good use of the acres of woodlands and playing fields. The school encourages a love of learning across a wide spectrum; English and mathematics are interspersed with science, music, yoga, hockey, art and drama. All of these can be taught within a hands-on lesson where original- ity is encouraged and life skills are developed. Throughout the school staff look to develop the pupils’ intellectual character by focusing on collabo-

ration, curiosity, initiative, resilience, responsibility, empa- thy and reflectiveness. The team want children to come into St Andrew’s with a smile and an air of excitement and expecta- tion. Many parents, when they visit, wish they had been taught in this way – in an environment where learning is made fun. This philosophy carries on into the Prep school where boys and girls aged seven to 13 continue to flourish in an environment where they are encouraged to develop independent thought and learn- ing through discovery. St Andrew’s has an outstanding reputation in preparing pupils for their first-choice senior school
