689 1939 (11 Jan.) An incoming air mail cover from Pan American Clipper Ship in USA to American Consulate, Chungking, via Hong Kong. On front bearing USA Virginia Dare Born Roanoke 5c x 10, air mail 6c orange, tied by ‘LOS ANGELES/HOLLYWOOD’ machine roller cancel and ‘LOS ANGELES’ cds. Redirected by air mail to Shanghai, and then redirected again to Manila with double ring ‘MANILA/6.6.39’ cds, handstamped ‘RETURNED TO SENDER/5.7.39’ frame chop in violet. On reverse, with a lot of cancellations, ‘HOLLYWOOD/11.1.39’, ‘HONGKONG/24.1.39’ bilingual ‘CHUNGKING/29.1.39’ arrival cds. ‘AMERICAN CONSULATE/MANILA/11.4.39’ frame chop in black. A nice cover from the Nationalist party controlled Chungking to Japanese occupied Shanghai over Trans-Pacific Ocean Clipper and airmail routes. Photo HK$ 4,500 - 5,000
