Assistant Coaches

RICHARD SANCHEZ - Running Backs, 2nd Year; Special Teams Coordinator Richard Sanchez begins his second year with the Toreros where he will again coach the running backs. This year he also takes over as Special Teams Coordinator. He provides a wealth of coaching experience. Prior to USD he was at San Diego State for two years in the role of offensive graduate assistant working with the offensive line and returners. Prior to that he was the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at San Diego High for two years. Between 1993-97 he coached at Montclair HS in San Bernardino County, and at Las Cruces HS in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A 1993 graduate of New Mexico State (B.A. in Physica l Education), Richard also played for the Aggies between '89-90 as a wide receiver. After graduation he pl ayed one year ofsemi-pro ball with the San Bernardino Blitz as a wide receiver in 1994. A San Diego native, Richard played two years at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, and graduated from Sweetwater HS in 1986. In 2002 he earned hi s Masters Degree in Exercise and utritional Science from San Diego State. Richard and hi s wife, Maria, have one daughter, Kri stiana.

KYLE SLUSSER - Inverts/2nd Year Kyle Slusser begins hi s second year on the staff where he will be in charge of the inverts on the defensive side ofthe ball. o strangerto USO, Slusser played fortheToreros between 1997-200 I. His senior year (200 I) he was se lected the team's Defensive Player of the Year, was a irst Team All-Pioneer Football League pick and was named a Honorab le Mention I-AA Mid-Major All-America by The Football Gazette. He is the program's a ll-time leader in interceptions with 15; he a lso shares the single-game mark of3 picks. Among USO I-AA players, he ranks fourth all-time with 261 total tackles. During the 1998 & 1999 seasons he earned 2nd Team All-PFL honors. From Alta Loma, California, Kyl e prepped at Alta Loma HS where he was a four-sport letterman. He graduated from USO in 200 I with a degree in Sociology.

MICHAEL FISHER - Tight Ends/1st Year Michael Fisher begins his first season on the Torero staff where he wi II be in charge of coaching the tight ends. He joins USO from Syracuse University where he was a graduate assistant coach since 2000. At Syracuse he coached with both offense and special teams, and also gained experience in coordi– nating defensive and special teams scout teams; film breakdown of all opponents; coordinating recruiting weekends; off-season strength & conditioning programs; and summer camps. Prior to Syracuse he was a tight ends coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ( 1998-2000), and an offensive line coach at Santa Margarita High School ( 1994-98). A 1999 graduate of Cal Poly SLO, Fisher earned his B.S . degree in Kinesiology.

SHAUN MURGEL - Defensive Line/1st Year Shaun Murgel begins his first year with the Torero coaching staff where he wi ll coach the defensive linemen. Murge l comes to USO via the University of Montana Western where he was a defens ive assistant coach since 200 I. This past season he was the linebackers coach, and in 200 I was the defensive ends coach. Prior to that he was head football coach at Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Montana ( 1996-2000) and assistant football coach at Broadwater High School ( 1995-96) in Townsend, Montana. He earned his B.S . in Secondary Education from Western Montana College in 1996.

STEVE JACOBACCI - Offensive Assistant/1st Year Steve Jacobacci begins his first year with the Torero coaching staffwhere he wi ll be an Offensive Assistant, and also coach the kickers and punters. The past four years he was head coach at Patrick Henry HS. Prior to that he was an assistant at Patrick Henry twice ('95-99 & '85-90), head coach at Madison HS ('90-95) and assistant at USO High School ('78-85). Most of his coaching experience has been on the offensive side of the ba ll. A 1968 graduate of USO (B.S . in Biology), he went on to earn his Master's in Education from San Diego State ( 1994). Since 1976 he taught Science and Chemistry at the high schoo l level. Steve and his wife, Stasia, have two ch il dren - Rochelle and Michael.
