The Alumnus ran concurrently with Outlook, a tabloid, from 1989 to 1992. They merged in 1993 as Outlook, which became a magazine in 2004. A supplement to the magazine, an e-newsletter, started in 2011.

Publications for alumni go back 90 years. The Stout Institute Alumnus ran from 1926 to 1929. Another newsletter was published from the 1950s until 1962. Stout University Foundation relaunched the Stout Alumnus, which ran from 1966 until 1992, first as a newsletter and then as a magazine.
