D i rt The on Napa Great wines begin with great dirt, something that Napa Valley has in abundance. In fact, within the Napa AVA are half of the world’s recognized soil orders, over 30 different soil series, and more than 100 soil variations. Everything from the rich, alluvial soils of the valley floor to volcanic basalt in the mountains impresses its own unique characteristics on the grapes and, eventually, the wines. And all this from a relatively tiny region–only 30 miles long and just a few miles wide producing a mere 4% of California’s total wine output. While Napa is known for producing top examples of many varietal wines, its true star is Cabernet Sauvignon. Atlas Peak, Calistoga, Coombsville, Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, Oak Knoll District, Oakville, Rutherford, Spring Mountain, St. Helena, Stags Leap, and Yountville each AVA can lay claim to its own particular styles of Cabernet. With some of the best raw materials that Nature can provide,

one can see why Napa Valley and its subregions are becoming known more for their terroirs than their tasting rooms. And why, when we talk about “the dirt on Napa,” it’s nothing but good. — The Winebow Group Wine Education Dept .
