Notes from the Hall

We are thankful to all for their patience as we experienced our debut as a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. We charged a lot of cell phones, filled many water jugs, poured a lot of coffee, and managed to serve a delicious soup lunch on Wednesday. Two main problems became evident during our trial run: the current generator is not large enough to handle a multiday power outage, and there was some expectation that we would be serving meals every day or allowing unlimited kitchen use. Upgrading the generator will cost a lot, so we will have to be creative in finding funds to do so. Serving three meals a day is not part of our Red Cross agreement, nor is public use of the kitchen. We are working to address the need to feed people in very cold weather, but our all-volunteer staff does not have the ability to turn out dozens of meals day after day.

This month’s Community Lunch will be on December 13 and is being sponsored by John and Courtney Wilson. Once again, we are partnering with the CIUMC Food Pantry to raise funds for Christmas holiday meals. The suggested donation for each Community Lunch is $7, and half of all proceeds will go directly to the Food Pantry.We will also have a jar for any additional funds you would like to contribute. The last time we held this fundraiser we were overwhelmed by the response! Let’s do even better this year! Thank you for supporting the Hall and its various programs. The Foot Doctor, Dr. Rybka, is coming to Chebeague on Wednesday, January 3 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Call 829-6463 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
