Alcalá 1989

BASEBALL The University of San Diego men's baseball team heads Into the 1989 season off a 1988 season which saw thempost a 28-28 record. Al– though hit heavY in the power deportment by the graduation of Sean Boron. Dave Rois. and Mari< Trafton. the Toreros move In the '89 sea– son on a noteof optimism. There Is every reason to believe this team can reach, and, perhaps, surpass last yea's win total Much of the optimism is placed squarely In the laps of two returnng players - senior Chuck Graham and junior Parris Sorlanello. Graham led USO 1n batting average In '88, hitting an even 400. Sorlanello is expected to provide much of the "long bal" threat In '89. Head Coach John Cunningham wlH also count on senior Infielders Andy Roberts and Chris Bwy to provide his '89 team with much leadership The '89 Toreros. In direct contrast to Its '88 edi– tion. will go as far as the pitcher staff will carry them Leading the way wHI be a pair of rlg\t handers - senior Jim Westkxld and sophomore James Fergason. Cunningham wlN count on two left-handers. Tony Battllega and Dave Monast– ero. tocaptalntheballpencrew. Thekeytothe Toreros' pltchng success. however. may be the hoped for resurgence of two jlxllors - Pat Fitz– Simons. a rlghthander. and lefthander Louis Skertlch. Both pitchers had outstanding fresh– man campaigns before sufferlng ttvough Slb– par sophomore seasons In '88. Both FltzSlmons and Skertlch wil need to bounce bock In '89 In order to increase the Toreros' chances of suc– cess
