In fact, on ly twice be fore has the host schoo l ever advanced to the fin al (Santa Clara fe ll to Gonzaga in the 1999 title game; the SCU Broncos fell to LMU in the 1988 championship). TOP SEED CHALLENGE The # I seed has lost in the first round of the tourn ament in three of the last six years (Sa nta C lara fell to LM U in "97; Pepperd ine in '96 and LMU in ' 95). The # I has taken th e champi onship just fo ur times in the previous 13 years (LMU in 1988 , Pepperdine in 199 1 and '92, Gonzaga in 1999) . NEW wee TOURNEYFORMA T FOR 2002, 2003 The WCC Pres idents Counci l announced that starting in 2002, the WCC Tournaments w ill be merit-based and limited to six teams w ith the regu– lar-season champi ons hosting the semi fina ls and fin als. The Nos. I and 2 seeds, based on regul ar-season records, w ill receive first round byes. Seed 6 w il l p lay at No . 3, and seed No. 5 wi ll play at No. 4. The fina l fo ur teams will compete for the championship at the site o f the regu– lar-season champion .
