Colorado Indian Gaming Analysis

Located in the Southwestern corner of Colorado, the Ute Mountain Ute tribe and Southern Ute Indian tribe continued to operate free of state regulation and gaming revenue contributions. The Ute Mountain Ute tribe operates the Ute Mountain Casino Hotel and Resort, located in Towaoco, Colorado. The facility includes approximately 800 gaming machines and 15 table games. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe operates the Sky Ute Casino Resort located in Ignacio, Colorado. The facility operates approximately 650 gaming machines and 15 table games. While the two tribes have benefitted from minimal state regulation, they face the challenge of not being located near a major metropolitan market. However, both tribes have looked to innovate and capitalize on the resources the region does provide. With an immense amount of summer tourism, the tribes have strived to develop resort style destinations, offering luxury hotels and RV campsites. The Sky Ute Casino has taken even greater efforts through the development of a spa, nearby golf course, and marketing the regional recreational activities. The Sky Ute Tribe has also coordinated bus tours visiting the area, offering tourist the amenities of a luxurious facility, the chance to visit the region, and most importantly, enjoy gaming entertainment.
