For the last 15 years, Kansas tribes have benefited from the exclusive right to operate casinos within the state. However, this right has evaporated in recent years with the introduction of Kansas commercial gaming. Recent developments in the Kansas Gaming industry that will increase competition include: • On December 15, 2009, Kansas opened its first commercial casino, the Boot Hill Casino located in Dodge City, Kansas, operated by the Butler National Corporation. • On April 30, 2010, construction began on the Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, located in Kansas City, Kansas, which is expected to open in 2012. • The State awarded the South Central gaming license (one of four licenses in the state) to Peninsula Gaming LLC, for the development of a casino just south of Wichita, Kansas. • The Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma continues their efforts to implement Class III gaming facilities in both the Kansas City and Wichita markets.

Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation

As the competition for tribal revenues increases, the Kansas tribes are looking for new ways to attract patrons. In 2010, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation worked towards becoming a resort destination through the construction of their Firekeeper Golf Course, which will become Notah Begay III’s first signature course. While the future of Kansas gaming begins to change and become more competitive, the Kansas tribes will continue to benefit from avoiding a state imposed gaming revenue contribution, while their commercial competition will face a 27% revenue tax.
