and the surprise après meal entertainment provided by Francois was brilliant.” On the 28 June Route 50’s Stan the Panda attended Armed Forces Day. After a last minute call for support, Scarborough branch members Dave and Tracy Seavers, David Lewis, Chris Charlton and Mark Faunt - ably assisted by his wife Emma and daughter Lucy - helped out on the day. Stan was given a very fitting venue right in front of one of the few remaining police telephone boxes. Chris told Police World, “There was a great footfall of passers-by and being overflown by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the last remaining flight worthy Avro Vulcan bomber was sensational.” The sum of £300 was raised in aid of the National Police Memorial Day. The next day, Chris and Keith Hughes met IPA Section Australia member Geoff Bartlett and his wife Sue. Geoff and Sue are from Shepparton, about 100 miles north of Melbourne and last visited the UK in 2009. Having been taken on a guided tour of York by York branch Secretary Alan Brown the evening before, the group met at Pickering Station before travelling to Whitby aboard the heritage North York Moors Railway. Hauled by steam locomotive 45428 Eric Treacy from Grosmont to Whitby.

At Whitby, the group enjoyed fish & chips at the harbour side before embarking up the 199 ‘Church Stairs’ leading from Whitby old town to the abbey. On returning to Whitby Station, Geoff was offered the exclusive experience to stand in the cab of the Eric Treacy although he did decline the offer to use the shovel! In July, Chris and Mark Faunt undertook what was more like a route march rather than a pleasant monthly walk. Having met at Scalby Mills near Scarborough, they marched just over 5 miles around the seafront and back. It was energetic and invigorating and the weather was kind. Chris then met the 2013 Section UK National Photography Competition winner Tracey Brewster on Royal Albert Drive, Scarborough - the spot where Tracey’s winning photograph was taken. Chris presented her with a certificate and £150 of Marks & Spencer’s vouchers. The photograph shows Tracey holding a large canvas print of her winning entry.

In June, a small group of Scarborough branch walkers met at East Ayton near Scarborough and enjoyed a pleasant walk along the bank of the River Derwent through Forge Valley. In recognition of Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday, all members were asked to wear something red, white and blue. Against the backdrop of rippling water, and the occasional smell of wild garlic, the group walked about 5 miles before retiring to the Denison Arms for a well-earned rest. The Scarborough branch Dining Club members met at The Monks Walk Restaurant, Beverley for a special evening - as they were joined by members from Humberside and York. The meal was special because of the historic Grade II listed building in which the restaurant is set, and the host and owner, Monsieur Francois Primpied. Chris Charlton, Scarborough branch Secretary, explained that the association between Francois and some members of the IPA goes back many years. Chris said, “To sum up the evening, the restaurant building was full of charm, the food was superb

Branch Secretary, David King said, “Some of us remembered using a lot of what the museum had on display and of course some of us had to try the 1940's pub! Unfortunately it didn’t have 1940’s prices.
