MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Health &Wellness in the New Year

I t’s a new year and new beginning, so start the year out right with tips from GM Financial’s 2013 wellness calendar. GM Financial’s 2013 “Pearls of Wellness Wisdom” calendars were given out to all U.S. GM Financial employees at the end of 2012. Each month has a specific wellness theme, giving employees a reminder to be more involved with their health. The cal- endar can also help employees become better consumers as team members will be making the switch to the Cigna HRA medical plan in 2014.

To improve your overall health, the calendar offers helpful advice including exercise and diet tips. Some of this year’s main themes will focus on ways to prevent heart disease and high cholesterol, avoid stress, and promote a healthier you. Here are some examples from the 2013 wellness calendar on how to achieve these goals in the New Year: ` Promote a healthier YOU. – When you think about making healthier choices, most of us immediately think of diet and exercise. While changing your eat- ing habits and incorporating exercise into your daily routine can improve your overall health by increasing energy, reducing stress, and decreasing the risk of disease; getting enough sleep, practicing sun safety and avoiding smok- ing can also enhance your health significantly. Making healthier life choices does not have to occur all at once; you can start slowly and gradually build up to that fitness program or encourage yourself to quit smoking this year. Don’t just think about changing your life for the better, do it with the help of the wellness tips found throughout the GM Financial wellness calendar! ` Avoid stress. – Stress can be an unavoidable feeling at times; however, there are healthy ways to deal with stress such as taking a walk, calling a friend, work- ing out or even playing with a pet. Recent studies have shown that excessive amounts of stress can lead to health problems, so give yourself time for rest and renewal each day. In the wellness calendar, the month of March promotes ways to reduce stress and avoid financial stress through financial planning. ` Prevent heart disease and high cholesterol. – Cardiovascular diseases are the nation’s No. 1 cause of death, according to the American Heart Asso- ciation (AHA). The AHA promotes five important numbers you should know to prevent heart disease in this year’s wellness calendar; those numbers include blood pressure, waist measurement, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and blood sugar. If your blood pressure is 140/90 mm Hg or above, then you may have hypertension and may be at a higher risk for heart disease, stroke or other medical problems. Check out “Life’s simple 7 for a healthy heart” promoted during the month of February in your 2013 wellness calendar. In Canada for 2013, Ceridian’s LifeWorks will promote initiatives to Canadian team members to help enhance their overall health. Through these initiatives LifeWorks will provide featured seminars and packets to encourage team members to continue a
