The Gazette 1990

The Society is the professional body for solicitors in Ireland, responsible for the training and education of solicitors, the maintenance of professional standards and the provision of services for its members. On completion of the current Director General's term of office in the Autumn, a successor is to be appointed. The person selected will work closely with the President and Council of the Society maintaining close contact with the Profession, with Government departments and other organisations. The Director General will be responsible for ensuring that appropriate strategies and policies are developed and efficiently implemented. The role will, therefore, require a great deal of managerial talent in directing and motivating senior executives and staff. The individual we are seeking may/may not be a member of the legal profession, but should have a wide range of personal contacts in legal, business and Government circles. The challenges posed by the position require that he/she have the intellectual and communication abilities to present complex issues clearly. Organisational talent combined with commercial and financial skills are also necessary attributes. While age is not a major factor, it is unlikely that a candidate under 35 will have the requisite stature.
