GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The General Assistance (GA) Program is a State-mandated, municipally administered financial assistance program designed to serve as the program of last resort for residents who are unable to meet their basic needs. These basic needs may include, but are not limited to, food, shelter, heating fuel, and electricity. Individuals seeking assistance through the GA program must first exhaust all other available resources and assistance programs before eligibility can be considered. General Assistance provides a specific amount and type of aid for defined basic necessities during a limited period of time. In accordance with Title 22 MRSA §4301(5), the program is not intended to function as a continuing grant-in-aid or categorical welfare program. Eligibility determinations are made for periods of up to thirty (30) days, based on the applicant’s circumstances and anticipated income during that timeframe. To receive General Assistance, applicants must comply with all program rules and meet established eligibility requirements as outlined in State statute and municipal ordinance. The General Assistance Program for the Town of Harrison is administered through the Town Office, located at 20 Front Street, Harrison, Maine 04040. Residents seeking General Assistance are required to call (207) 583-2241, Extension 311, to request an appointment with the General Assistance Administrator. All applications are handled confidentially and in accordance with State law. For emergencies occurring after regular business hours, residents may contact the Cumberland County Communications Center at 1-800-501-1111, which will coordinate with the appropriate municipal officials. The Town of Harrison remains committed to administering the General Assistance Program fairly, responsibly, and in compliance with all State requirements, while ensuring that assistance is available to residents experiencing genuine financial hardship.
Sincerely,
Kathryne Wilcox Executive Assistant / General Assistance Administrator
