life. This tradition is every 10th year and is called “The year of outdoor life” with various events in nature for all age groups. This tradition is set by the government in a public paper (Meld.St. 18, 2015-2016). Good health is linked to travel in nature, and for example in Stavanger the municipality have made a public green document with the purpose of preserve and further develop Stavanger’s green structure for people, for biodiversity, and to contribute to climate adaptation. One requirement for new housing projects that they must be designed with access to nature and green areas within 300 meters (Heimann, 2025). Figure 4. Research shows that the most important motives for spending time in nature are good nature experiences, finding peace and quiet in nature, de-stressing, spending time with family and friends and taking care of one’s own health (Waaler, 2023). We have a term describing the most important value of outdoor life: “It is more important to be in nature than to do in nature”. Hiking in nature brings people together. Nature contributes to the development of friendships and good relationships. Nature treats everyone equally. In nature we have to cooperate and solve challenges together. Listening to nature and to each other becomes more important than talking yourself. Nature is the home of the Norwegian culture. Nature can do without us, but we can’t do without nature. Therefore, we must take care of nature.
