• Revised sections of the Plan and SOPs that are relevant to the readers • New laws or regulations that can immediately affect emergency performance • Changes in emergency organization structure or components • Changes in the EOC operations • Changes in assignment of key positions • Changes to the annual training assignments A reading assignment should be accompanied with a “read and sign” sheet to be returned to the Safety Officer. The staff assigned to read materials should also keep a copy of the “read and sign” sheet for their personnel files. Briefings Briefings are time intensive. They often involve fewer individuals than would be featured in classroom presentations. Sometimes a briefing is for a specific individual. There must be compelling reasons to hold briefings. These can include: • Changes that require immediate awareness and change of behavior • Warnings regarding impending threats to safety, health, the environment, or property • Updates on current issues that can impact staff morale • Directives from the Operational Area or Chief Executive Officer that require immediate attention • Updates on information that a member of the emergency organization was not able to acquire because of a missed training opportunity—this fulfills a legal requirement to keep all of the organization properly trained in accordance with their assigned training curriculum Classroom Instruction Classroom instruction provides a formal environment for transmitting information that can become knowledge in the participant. Most classroom training should be held at either the primary or alternate EOC, when possible. For larger classes, or when the emergency facilities are not available, the hospital will house classroom training in house as room are available. The Safety Officer should present most training. Some classroom instruction can be provided by specialized training organizations. Some of these organizations can come directly to the clinic sites. Other training organizations may require staff to travel to another site. Training can be provided through such diverse organizations as:
