Kern Medical Emergency Preparedness

EXERCISE SCENARIOS The following scenarios may prove useful in developing drills and exercises for Kern Medical. These scenarios should be viewed as starting points that can adapted to reflect local conditions (for realism) as well as local hazards and priorities. Major apartment fire occurs in the neighborhood Fire trucks arrive just as 200 people flee the apartment. Kern Medical is the closest provider of health care in the neighborhood. Within 10 minutes 5 people enter the Emergency Department of the Kern Medical complaining of smoke inhalation. They demand care. Within another 5 minutes another 5 people arrive also requesting care. The ED charge nurse contacts the shift Physician and decides to begin to triage patients. The ED Charge nurse contacts the House Supervisor of the response and informs him that the Emergency Department is beginning triage efforts. How many patients can the Kern Medical provide care for, what stabilization activities will Kern Medical begin? School Bus crash Right in front Kern Medical a school bus is rear ended. Thirty children are on the bus. EMS arrives, but decides that because of the weather all of the children should be brought into the Kern Medical. EMS requests that Kern Medial evaluate the patients. How many patients can Kern Medical provide care for, what stabilization activities will Kern Medical begin first? Bio-event Beginning at 8:00 am today the phone is ringing off the hook with worried patents calling because their kids are sick with flu like symptom, 104 temperature and nausea. By 8:30 am 20 children have been brought to the Emergency Department with the same symptoms. Mothers are unwilling to leave until their kids are seen. It is clear that over the next several hours the number of patients will continue to grow. How does Kern Medical determine which patients are in need of immediate care, which have been exposed to what, how does Kern Medical reorganize to evaluate this tidal wave? Flood in the city It has been raining for several days. The river on the other side of town has begun to overflow its banks. A number of elderly who live near the river have begun to come and sit quietly in Kern Medicals lobby. Right now there are about 30 of them in the lobby. All of a sudden one slumps to the floor. Two others begin to scream for help. How does Kern Medical handle the surge of patients and emergency respose? Earthquake At 10:10 am a 6.5 earthquake rumbles through the city. Roads are cut, commercial utilities are severed. Members of the community begin to arrive into the emergency
