Kern Medical Emergency Preparedness

RADIOACTIVE DISASTER (Internal) PURPOSE: To provide procedures and minimize risks to patients, staff, and others coming to the hospital’s facilities during a Radioactive Hazardous Material Chemical Disaster. Radioactive Hazard - any material (solid, liquid, or gas) or device which emits waves or particles at energy density levels that could reasonably cause acute or chronic bodily harm. Gamma, alpha, or beta particles; other atomic or nuclear particles or rays; x- rays, sonic, ultrasonic, or infrasonic waves are some examples. POLICY STATEMENT: It is the policy of Kern Medical to provide guidelines for hospital personnel to follow during a Code Orange/ Code Triage and to have an organized and effective response to a Radioactive Hazard within Kern Medical occupied buildings. Providing for the safety of patients, visitors, employees, staff, and other occupants of the building in a radioactive hazardous situation is the primary goal. The Nuclear Medicine department staff has been specifically trained in handling and the usage of radioactive materials. Their departmental specific procedures will address the handling, personal protective equipment, storing and disposal of radioactive materials. During normal working hours, carriers will be instructed to deliver radioactive packages directly to the Nuclear Medicine Department. During off-duty hours, security personnel or other designated individuals will accept delivery of radioactive packages in accordance with the following procedures: • Any packages containing radioactive material that arrive during off-duty hours shall be received by the security officer on duty. The material will be delivered directed to the <>. The officer should direct the courier to place the package where designated <> and secure the door. If the package appears to be leaking or damaged during delivery, immediately notify the Radiation Safety Officer. Ask the carrier to remain until it can be determined if the courier will return with the package at a later time. • All spills of radioactive material shall be reported to the Radiation Safety Officer immediately. This individual shall provide instruction on the spill cleanup procedures. An incident report will be filed with the Radiation Safety Officer. • Isolate area and individuals contaminated for treatment and decontamination (Code Orange / Code Triage Alert). • Discontinue elective care in isolated area-Close Outpatient Department • PROCEDURE:  Minor Spills  In the event of a minor spill that pose no immediate threat to health,
