Discussion

Graphical indicators provide a visual method of alerting you if the actual project results are not meeting expectations. Microsoft Project can display a variety of graphical indicators in different colors, including filled circles, flags, squares, plus and negative signs, diamonds, arrows, and a variety of other symbols. You can use a combination of different indicators in varying colors to convey the information you have selected.

You add graphical indicators by first defining a custom field and then using the Graphical Indicators dialog box to specify the values to be tested (the criteria), and the graphical indicator to use if the data matches the criteria.

Each criteria requires a test condition which is selected from the Test for field in the Graphical Indicators dialog box. Common test conditions include equal , does not equal , is greater than , is less than , and is within . After selecting a condition, you complete the test by selecting the value in the Value(s) field against which you want to compare the field data. The final step is to select the graphical indicator you wish to use from the Image field if the tested data matches the condition.

Once the custom field showing the graphical indicators is created, you can add the field to any view. An example of using graphical indicators would be to alert you if your costs are under, on, or over budget.
