The Raptor Protection of Slovakia (RPS) is carrying out research into the effects on birds of electrical wiring. The aim is to protect preferred species on the Natura 200 territories. RPS is working in collaboration with the Východoslovenská Distribučná power distribution company. More than 50 specially trained experts are monitoring over 8,000kmof wiring in Slovakia. The study is part of the project “LIFE Energy in the Country” and monitoring will be carried out in two parts, the first of which began in January 2015 and ended in March. Východ oslovenská Distribučná (VSD) and other energy companies will provide the resources for the ecologization as financial investment to co-finance the project, with VSD giving almost €210,000 within five years. The European Commission will contribute €1.4 million. Partners in the project are VSD, Západoslovenská Distribučná, the university of veterinary medicine and pharmacy in Košice, and the state nature conservancy of the Slovak republic.

The joint venture between OFS and Sviazstroy-1 has opened an optic fiber cable factory in the Maslovski industrial zone of Voronezh, Russia. Vladislav Kalashnikov, general manager of OFS Sviazstroy-1, said: “Today OFS Sviazstroy-1 is one of the top Russian optical fiber cable factories. This new factory is expected to create additional jobs and will increase the joint venture's manufacturing capacity significantly.” Michael Pavlychev, MD for OFS Russia and CIS, added: “With the extra capacity of the new factory, we can better serve the growing demands of our customers developing transcontinental telecommunications backbones.” The joint venture was founded in 1999. Capacity expansion was needed in 2007 to meet the market demands, and was followed by a second phase of expansion from 2012 to 2014. “The new location of the fiber optic cable manufacturing facility is an ideal fit for OFS Sviazstroy-1 with Voronezh city government’s emphasis on attracting and supporting growing, successful and technologically enhanced businesses,” said Kalashnikov.

Consultancy group and events organiser CRU is hosting the 9 th World Wire and Cable conference in Barcelona from 15 th to 17 th June. During 2014 the metallic cable market started strongly but lost momentum into the second half of the year, while the fiber optic market strengthened in the final quarter and was propelled by excellent performance in Europe. CRU predicts that this market situation will reverse during 2015, with the fiber optic market showing less growth as a result of slowdowns in the Chinese and European markets. Theconferenceprogramwill feature industry experts from manufacturers and cable end users, providing cable makers, suppliers and customers with case studies and discussions of the trends that are shaping the industry. The detailed program breaks into parallel streams for niche topics, and the event also offers an opportunity for peer to peer networking with wire and cable companies from over 30 countries.

Candor has delivered three of its Copperjet plants to a customer in Asia. The plants are equipped with Candor’s latest technology for the copper coating of welding wires. Copperjet's modular design makes it possible to meet a wide range of applications according to customer demands. This latest project consists of two chemical high speed copper coating plants and one electrolytic/chemical copper coating plant operating at wire speeds up to 30m per second. The coating technology is generally applied to high quality welding wire such as CO 2 , FCW, SAW and other copper coated wires.
