DAYS 1-5 KOLKATA / SAMTAGHAT Embarking in Kolkata (Calcutta), head upriver and explore the old temple town of Kalna, the brass-making village of Matiari, and the fascinating 19th century Hazarduari Palace Museum. A journey on the feeder canal to the Farakka Lock Gate gives you a chance to see a myriad of birdlife. DAYS 6-12 SAMTAGHAT / VARANASI Visit Vikramashila, a Buddhist university established in the 8th century, and Nalanda, perhaps the oldest seat of learning in India, and explore Rajgir’s fine complex of temples

and monasteries. Head to Bodhgaya, where the Buddha gained enlightenment, then enjoy the cultural whirl of Varanasi, with its golden temples, ashrams, and burning ghats . Witness a candle-lit evening aarti ceremony on the Ganges and visit Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Depart on Day 12.
