Trail Funding Committee:
T he MSA has been working hard to prepare legisla tion that needs to be brought in front of the 2025 session to better finance our clubs’ trail maintenance & equipment funding. Right now, we are drafting legislation and reach ing out to potential sponsors for a bill this session. We gathered this idea from our many discussions (in person & through formstack/ emails) with MSA members over the past few seasons. Thank you all for providing a great list to go through and
choose from. We will have many other opportunities to utilize the other ideas moving forward, as there is no one way to solve the funding gap. If you have ideas, please reach out to me with it. This legislation will be just one part of an ongoing & multi-part approach to clos ing the over $3 million fund ing gap. Other ways to close the gap include an updated gas tax formula that will pro vide approximately $200,000 more to the grant program this season. The trails bond
(question 4) is another fund ing source that we will have more specific information on next month. As you work though the season, please keep good records and report all your time and expenses and report them when submit ting your grant. The only way to truly know what we need to be chasing for funding is to know what all the clubs spend to prepare, maintain & close out the trails on an annual basis. The following pages are
compiled by the Off-Road Vehicle office, Snowmobile Program of the grants from across our State. Each club has a different situation, each mile of trail is different, each region its own challenges. Our Interconnected Trail Sys tem (ITS) depends on every club doing the hard work each season to prepare for snowmobilers in their com munity. We all have a part to play so we (and others) can get out and enjoy a snowmo bile ride. Happy trails folks.
Maine DACF Snowmobile Grants For those who are not familiar with the DACF Snowmobile Grant program below is a summary of the four different types of Grants. • Club o Available to Snowmobile Clubs registered with the Bureau of Parks and Lands Snowmobile Program. o Grant money is to help defray the cost of Snowmobile trail preparation, including pre-season work, and winter grooming. • Municipal o Available to municipalities for sharing the cost of construction and maintenance of snowmobile trails. o Local matching money from the town, city or county must be available. o Grant application must be submitted by the town, city or county. • Capital o Available to political subdivisions and Snowmobile Clubs registered with the Bureau of Parks and Lands. o Grant money is to help defray the cost of trail grooming equipment o Groomer operators must complete and pass the Groomer OperatorTraining for the club to qualify for this grant. • Disaster Relief o Available to political subdivisions and Snowmobile Clubs registered with the Bureau of Parks and Lands. o Grant money is for remediation due to catastrophic weather events that significantly impact the connectivity of the state funded trail system.
