A mixed franking cover from Swatow registered to USA, on front, bearing CNC 1st Dah Yeh surcharged $5,000 0n $100 in pair, 1st Union surcharged $10,000 on $20 strip of 4, SYA 2nd Dah Tung print $200,000 in pair and SYS 3rd Shanghai Dah Tung print $1,000,000 in strip of 6, both tied by bilingual ‘SWATOW’ cds, handstamped ‘Route of Water and Land’ ( 水陸路) in black cachet. handstamped ‘Supposed liable to customs service; in straight violet and large single ring ‘PASSED FREE/U.S. CUSTOMS, S.F.CAL.’ in violet, on reverse with bilingual ‘CANTON/10.11.48’ transit, ‘SAN FRANCISO/23.12.48’ and ‘RICHMOND/23.12.48’ arrival cds. Very late usage of CNC currency covers, the last day of the CNC stamps was on 18th Nov. 1948. The effective date of the CNC used as Gold Yuan was on 6th Nov. 1948.
