James Cote Honored with the 2026 President’s Award Presented by Mark Chinnock

J ames Cote has been named the recipient of the 2026 President’s Award—one of the association’s high est honors—presented by MSA Pres ident Mark Chinnock. This award rec ognizes individuals whose leadership, dedication, and impact have helped shape and strengthen snowmobiling in Maine. The path to this recognition began during a pivotal moment for the MSA. In January 2020, the association faced the retirement of its Executive Director, who had also served as its voice at the Statehouse in Augusta. In response, a Steering Committee was formed to guide the organization through uncer tain times. What followed was nothing short of a “trial by fire,” as the com mittee navigated not only a leadership transition, but also the unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. By early 2023, the MSA had emerged resilient and strong—but one critical element was still missing: a professional and consistent presence in Augusta. Without it, the association risked losing its voice on legislation directly affecting Maine’s snowmobiling community. With overwhelming support from its

membership, the MSA set out to find the right advocate. That search led to James Cote—a moment that would prove to be transformative. From the very beginning, James brought energy, authenticity, and a deep respect for the sport. What started as an interview quickly became the foundation for one of the most important partnerships in the association’s recent history. Since that time, James has become an indispensable part of the MSA. His commitment goes far beyond the expectations of his role. He vigilantly monitors activity at the Statehouse, ensuring that any bill or discussion affecting snowmobiling is brought for ward and addressed. His instincts, pro fessionalism, and understanding of the legislative process allow him to navi gate complex issues with confidence— knowing when to advocate, when to observe, and when to step back, always in alignment with the MSA’s priorities. Perhaps most importantly, James has the rare ability to translate the com plexities of Augusta into clear, mean ingful information for MSA leadership. His communication keeps the organiza tion informed, engaged, and prepared to make sound decisions that benefit

clubs and riders across the state. Respected among his peers and well connected within Maine’s outdoor rec reation community, James has built a reputation as someone whose voice carries weight. His work with other organizations further strengthens his effectiveness, bringing a broader per spective to the issues that impact snowmobiling. Yet beyond his professional accom plishments, it is James’ character that truly sets him apart. He is approachable, genuine, and always willing to take the time to connect—whether discussing legislation or simply sharing a conver sation about the outdoors. He is not just an advocate for the MSA, but a trusted partner and friend. The President’s Award is reserved for those who leave a lasting mark on the association. Through his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commit ment, James Cote has done exactly that. The Maine Snowmobile Association extends its sincere congratulations to James Cote on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for the vital role he continues to play in the future of snowmobiling in Maine.
