Figures up at IWCS

“What do we really ‘know’,” challenged Mr Jones as we explore greater knowledge through means never before available. The session also recognized recipients of the IWCS scholarships for 2012/2013, Erin Keaney and Katherine Spagnoli, both senior plastics engineering students at University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Once again, Cable Components Group hosted Monday night football, featuring Troy Brown, former star wide-receiver with the New England Patriots. Brown fascinated the partygoers with stories about his years in professional football, and generally charmed everyone in attendance, whether a fan of his former team or not. The IWCS Professional Development Courses attracted nearly 100 stu- dents in Providence. The PDCs remain among the most broadly respected wire/cable and connectivity educa- tional courses in the industry. Next year’s conference is scheduled tobeheldat theCharlotteConvention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, between 10 th and 13 th November.

A ten per cent increase in attendance this year confirmed IWCS as one of the main technical conferences and symposiums on the international wire and cable calendar. The event – in Providence, Rhode Island, USA – drew 1,125 registrants, and with more than 100 exhibitors, and a shortened exhibition schedule, attendees were kept very busy with a program of more than 120 technical presentations, and visits to the exhibitors. IWCS CEO John Barteld said: “This year’s event was so rich in content that the Technical Symposium had to be scheduled for an additional half day.” “Even with the extended Symposium, attendance in the sessions was strong right up to the end”, added Barteld. The plenary session featured a presentation by Michael T Jones, chief technology advocate for Google, Inc. Jones captured the imagination of the audience with his vision of the future of our connected world. “We don’t know what people want or can use until we give them tools”, reported Mr Jones, explaining the huge support for Google’s Kansas City network project where ultra-high speed down- loads and uploads are available.
