Zambia’s energy regulation board has approved an electricity transmission line from Maamba thermal power station to the Muzuma sub-station and granted a regulatory consent for Maamba Collieries and Zesco to sign a 265.5MW power purchase agreement. Maamba Collieries corporate affairs head Lavu Janardhan told The Times of Zambia that the power line’s construction would bring coal-powered electricity to the national grid, facilitating 265.5MW of the 300MW produced. He added that China- based SEPCO Electric Power Construction was building the transmission line simultaneously with the 300MW coal fired power plant on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. “Construction works are going on well as planned and the first unit is scheduled to be completed by October 2014 and the second unit by January 2015,” Janardhan said, adding that on completion of the project, this will be the first coal-fired thermal power plant in Zambia and will meet local energy demands. Taiwan’s killed wire rod price rise

The transaction price of blast furnace (BF) killed wire rod is expected to rise in the Taiwanese market, driven by higher transaction prices of electric furnace (EF) killed wire rods. The price of BF killed wire rod had increased to over $800 per ton by May this year, boosted by the surged prices of electricity and oil. However, a sluggish Taiwanese wire rod market has caused the transaction prices of BF killed wire rod to drop. The current transaction price of BF killed wire rod is below $700 per ton in the Taiwanese market. Industry watchers have commented that as the transaction prices of EF killed wire rods have increased recently, it may assist the BF killed wire rod price to rise in the near future.
