U.S. Department of Education Nominates New Assistant Secretary for OCTAE and Adds Senior Staff. On September 26, Secretary of Education DeVos announced that two new Senior Staff will be joining the U.S. Department of Education starting on October 2. Dr. Michael Wooten will be the Deputy Assistant Secre- tary and Acting Assistant Secretary for the Office of Ca- reer, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE). Dr. Leonard Haynes (OH) will be the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary. until confirmation by the Senate for the new Assistant Secretary. On Saturday, President Trump announced his intent to nominate Michigan state Representative Timothy Kelly to be the Assistant Secretary at OCTAE. Senate confirmation will be required for Representative Kelly’s appointment.

George Sifakis returns as Director of HOSA’s Wash- ington, D.C. Office. Septem- ber 25 was George’s last day as Director of the Office of Public Liaison in the Trump Administration.

The official White House state- ment read: This has been a long-planned depar- ture -- George has been a loyal member of the Trump Administration, and we are very grateful for his dedicated service and appreciate George's leadership and effective outreach to key constituencies across the country. The Office of Public Liaison has a very robust sched- ule already set moving into the fall and will con- tinue pushing forward on the President's agenda. Johnny DeStefano will serve as the new director.

Task Force for Voting Delegate Revisions

The 2017-2018 Executive Council, under the leadership of President Priya Rathakrishnan met with the State Advisors to discuss two issues: (1) Article IX, Section 1. Emblem and (2) Voting Delegate Participation at ILC.

At the January 2018 Board of Directors meeting, the follow- ing motions will be discussed:

SAM Conference Feedback Questions #47 and #48 of the 2017 Survey addressed the State Advisors Management Conference. Because of this recent survey, HOSA will not send out a SAM follow-up sur- vey but encourage you to forward any addi- tional input or recommendations you would like added to the survey responses. We take your feedback seriously. If you wish to send comments, email: karen.koeninger@hosa.org.

Motion #1 : It is moved to replace the original HOSA emblem/patch on the HOSA blazer with the new brand and text as displayed in the emblem two lines—future health | professionals.

Motion #2: It is moved that Voting Delegates be ineligible to compete in events at the ILC and that HOSA creates a track of educational activities for Voting Delegate participa- tion. Thanks to those volunteering to serve on the Task Force: Dana Stringer, Gene Napoliello, Mike Oechsner, and Janice Atkinson with members of the Executive Council on a meeting date yet to be determined.
