Tech giants race for renewables

Google has concluded what is believed to be the largest corporate purchase of renewable energy, to date, with a 40 percent increase in its energy investment. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, revealed in a company blog that the latest package of wind power and solar energy agreements, totalling 1,600MW, will bring the company’s renewables portfolio up to 5,500MW. “Once all these projects are operational, our carbon-free energy portfolio will produce more electricity than is used annually by places like Washington

DC, or entire countries such as Lithuania or Uruguay,” he said.

In the meantime, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos promised the company will be using 100 percent renewable energy in its global infrastructure by 2030, and is to buy 100,000 electric vehicles.
