In 1929, after a period of more than 10 years during which Maria Montessori and Albert Nienhuis worked closely together on the first Montessori materials, Nienhuis Montessori was officially founded. This year we celebrate 90 years of passion for material design, manufacturing and revision.

The Original Montessori Craft.

We go back to 18 October 1922, when Maria Montessori and Albert Nienhuis discussed several materials with a great eye for detail. After more than 90 years we love to share some of their considerations. Maria Montessori “I believe that after establishing silence it would be educational to ring well-toned bells, now calm and sweet, now clear and ringing, sending their vibrations through the child’s whole body...,giving a peace that pervades the very fibres of his being.” Albert Nienhuis “A unique production process creates a series of bells that are identical in appearance, but the vibrations brought about by a strike of a hammer produce 13 beautiful different notes.”

Continuing the legacy.

Montessori stated that ‘the hands are the instruments of human intelligence’. The use of the hands helps the child to construct himself. In our factory it is the hands that create the attractive, precise, ingenious and durable Montessori apparatus. This cannot be done without the passion for what we do. Nienhuis Bells Set The production as well as the mounting of the bells is still done by hand, with the greatest attention to detail.

Learning is in the details.

In the Montessori approach towards education all different subjects are considered as interconnected, integrated and related in order to understand the bigger picture. It is a cosmic, global and holistic approach to education, which makes learning purposeful and meaningful. These interrelations can also be found within the ingenious Montessori materials. A lot of attention to detail must be paid, to enable the children to discover these interrelations. Making precise dimensions, creating perfect shapes, and using the right corresponding colors are well embedded as part of our production process. In this process we are still learning every day. Details create the perfect tone Each bell is ground with a great amount of detail to create the perfect tone.
