Intermediate Google Earth Techniques June 11, 2012 – Vancouver, BC June 14, 2012 – Fort St. John, BC This session has been revised in February 2012. Google Earth can be a powerful tool for natural resource professionals and technicians. Google Earth is a general purpose tool for viewing, creating, and sharing informa- tion related to earth locations. Advanced Google Earth Techniques This session has been revised in February 2012. This seminar will show you how to make better use of your spatial data and documentary photos and to create more professional-looking Google Earth content for your organization or for online publication. The objec- tive is to enable you to do more with your field photos and other geo-data, keep them organized and acces- sible, and improve their usefulness to your audience. Google Earth Computer Workshop June 12, 2012 – Vancouver, BC In contrast with the Intermediate and Advanced Google Earth seminars, the purpose of this workshop is to allow each participant to work on a computer with access to the instructor. Exercises covering a range of difficulty will be available but participants may work on their own project instead. FEM and CFD – Engineering Modeling Methods The fundamentals and applications of two engineer- ing computational methods, Finite-Element and Finite-Volume will be explained. Applications of these methods of engineering analysis will be discussed with presentation of examples for solid, fluid and heat transfer cases. The second part of the seminar will focus on solving examples of energy systems using finite-element method. Short Circuit Analysis of Power Systems June 13, 2012 – Cranbrook, BC Everything you wanted to know about fault studies, but were afraid to ask. This seminar will teach how to perform manual and computer calculations to determine fundamental frequency voltages and currents during June 11, 2012 – Vancouver, BC June 14, 2012 – Fort St. John, BC June 12, 2012 – Burnaby, BC July 11, 2012 – Victoria, BC

will be able to understand the design strategies and modeling methodologies for sizing stormwater ponds that encompass a range of design functions and objectives.

Call for Presenters Are you an expert in your field who would like to contribute to the future of engineering and geoscience? APEGBC is actively seeking members to present on a variety of topics. This session is designed to introduce engineers to key financial tools used in evaluating the financial viability of projects. The key concepts of compounding, discount- ing, discount rates and terminal value will be presented. Building on those, we will review key financial metrics such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), return on equity (ROE), return on invested capital (ROIC), and levelized cost. A number of major approaches to evaluating capital investments such as discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and lifecycle costing will be covered. APEGBC Online Learning Centre The Online Learning Centre features audio recordings of previously held APEGBC seminars, synchronized with PowerPoint. New sessions will be added throughout the year. Visit www.apeg.bc.ca/cpdonlinelearning/ for a complete listing of sessions available. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of power system stability and control problems. This includes the basic concepts, physical aspects of the phenomena, methods of analysis, examples of incidents of system instability, challenges to the secure operation of present- day power systems, and comprehensive approach to enhancing system security. Law & Ethics Live Seminar June 21 & 22, 2012 – Vancouver, BC Learn about the key points of Law and Ethics that are critical to your practice as a professional engineer or geoscientists. This seminar will provide an overview of occupational health and safety, employment law, practical law, the professions, practice review, APEGBC’s discipline and enforcement process, code of ethics, and case studies. Key Financial Tools and How to Use Them July 5, 2012 – Vancouver, BC ability to communicate and network effectively can boost your profile and engender better business alliances and connections for mutual benefit. This session will enhance both your personal and professional life by providing you with some simple strategies to quickly build rapport with others, overcome shyness, start small talk and take it to BIG talk, and enter and exit conversations with finesse. Power System Stability and Control June 19 to 22, 2012 – Vancouver, BC

Smart Microgrid Workshop June 14, 2012 – Burnaby, BC

In this workshop, we will discuss the methodology and the process required to develop Smart Microgrid as the building block required to facilitate the transition to Smart Grid. Participants will gain firsthand knowledge of technologies, architectures, standards, approaches and experiences gained by workshop presenters who have been involved in the design and implementation of BCIT/BC Hydro’s Smart Microgrid in BCIT’s Burnaby campus. It covers Smart Microgrid concepts, Priority Applications and System Design. Negotiation Skills June 14, 2012 – Kelowna, BC Are you currently being underpaid for your skill and expertise? Are your customers, clients or employers more demanding and wanting more for less? Achieving success in this increasingly complex world requires a new set of core competencies, and the ability to negotiate effectively to get your needs met is at the top of the list. Hydraulic Modeling of Water Distribution Systems Are you making million dollar decisions based on inac- curate hydraulic models? The seminar begins with the basics of hydraulic theory as it applies to water distribution modeling, then takes participants through more advanced topics such as working with multiple scenarios, model calibration, pump selection, energy cost studies, extended period simulation, fire flow analysis and water quality. Alternative Energy – Current Status and Future Possibilities June 15, 2012 – Burnaby, BC The need for alternative energy and technologies with emphasis on renewable energy sources will be explained. The energy potential of these sources with their effects on CO 2 emission reduction will be dis- cussed. The path and challenges from existing energy technology status and sectors to the future ones will be discussed. Participants will learn about potential opportunities for engineering work and their contribu- tions in the global energy sector.
