Rodeo records broken: O’Connell tames Virgil, Yeary posts top bull ride Reigning two-time PRCA World Champion Bareback Rider Tim O’Connell met up with C5 Rodeo’s Virgil, the 2017 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year, at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo Aug. 19. The result was record breaking. O’Connell had a 91-point ride to set the rodeo record and capture a victory. “Virgil is something special,” O’Connell said. “Every time you nod your head he’s going to give you everything he has got.” The previous bareback riding record at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo was 89 points by Kelly Timberman in 2009. For his effort, O’Connell earned $6,542, helping him move into first place in the Aug. 20

Joe Beers critically injured in ATV accident PRCA team roping heeler Joe Beers, 29, was critically injured in an ATV accident Aug. 17 in Prineville, Ore. Brandon Beers, Joe’s older brother and a four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo team roping header, said Joe had a second surgery Aug. 20 and was stable and expected to make a full recovery. Joe and Brandon are the sons of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Mike Beers. A fundraiser was set up by a family friend at http://bit.ly/JoeBeersFundraiser. Preston Night Rodeo seeks arena donations That Famous Preston (Idaho) Night Rodeo is a marquee event each July – the most recent one July 26-28 – in the small, southeast Idaho town with a population of 5,000. The rodeo is drawing on supporters to help fund its next step: a new arena with more capacity, more comfortable seats and more ADA-compliant seating. PRCA | RAM World Standings with $160,144. • Bareback rider Orin Larsen had an 89-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Zulu Warrior, Aug. 15 to win the Canby (Ore.) Rodeo and set the rodeo record. The previous bareback riding record was 88 points, shared by Jason Havens (2009) and Wes Stevenson (2013). Larsen was sixth in the Aug. 20 world standings with $83,451. The Canadian cowboy qualified for the Wrangler NFR the last three years, finishing a career-best third in the world standings in 2016 with $219,373. • In bull riding, no one has had a better trip this season than Brody Yeary did Aug. 16. The Brock, Texas, cowboy had a PRCA season-high, 93-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Mobster to win the Gooding (Idaho) Pro Rodeo. The previous top ride of this year was 92 points, shared by J.W. Harris and Trey Benton III.
