BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI J ohn Mincey doesn’t hit the road hard. He’s often busy spending time with his family, especially doting on his 5-month-old daughter. With his wife, Kinsey, and plenty of friends in the stands, Mincey posted an 89-point ride on Rafter HRodeo Livestock’s No. 3109 to win the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, Aug. 8-11. The score was a personal best, as was taking home $5,795, for the West Plains, Mo., cowboy who lives less than three hours from Sikeston. “It was just pretty cool,” said Mincey, who turned 24 Aug. 19. “Whenever you’re closer to home like that, you’ve got friends and family that come watch you. It makes it that much cooler of a win to be that close (to home).” With a little extra money in his pocket, Mincey was considering going to a few more rodeos. Otherwise it would be back home to work on the family ranch with his dad, John Sr. “He’s probably mad at me,” Mincey laughed. “After I won Sikeston I told my dad I was taking the next couple weeks off work. He wants me to keep working when I come home. I want to go get on some bulls and keep rodeoing for now.”

show,” said Mincey, who has earned $10,391 this season. “I love seeing it. It doesn’t matter if I win, ride, lose or buck off. I’m just blessed to be there. I like watching those guys ride bulls. I’m just glad other guys got to watch me stay on one.” HOMEBODY A few years ago, Mincey was getting out on the road regularly. In 2014, he won nearly $20,000. In 2015, he won $12,800. But in 2016, he won nothing and made $622 in 2017, but that’s because he had other duties to attend to. He and Kinsey married two years ago. In October 2017 he underwent hernia surgery. Then came Oaklee Mae, born in March. Mincey juggles his rodeo time with his family life. “I feel sometimes, when I’m sitting at home, working at home, that I’m wasting the talent God gave me to be a representative for him,” Mincey said. “I get that craving for it again. I get out there and go for as long as I can, then come back and see that little girl and my wife.” Jacob O’Mara, a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bull rider, grew up with
