Educational Principles Following a review of our practice of education and discussion amongst ourselves, and our affiliates, the GFTU Educational Trust has agreed a strategic set of principles that will underpin our delivery of education for the coming years. These have been endorsed by both the GFTU Executive Committee and by the Education Officers of our affiliate unions.

Namely, our principles are: •To provide and develop an understanding of the political & economic context (of political economy and the underlying struggle between labour and capital) within which all Trade Unions operate •To provide and develop an understanding of the political & economic context which has shaped, and which continues to shape, the historic development of Trade Unions •To provide the skills and knowledge base needed to develop confident and well-informed activists in order to build and hone collective power •To see that our educational practice is informed by our commitment to the values of equality, diversity and inclusion •To ensure that GFTU education is forged through our commitments to social justice, the empowering of communities, and internationalism These principles will be applied to all courses and events, whatever their subject matter.

Find the GFTU course for you The GFTU offers a range of courses, from foundation level skills (in Maths & English) to practical training for union Reps; right the way up to the equivalent of degree (Level 4) and post-graduate (Level 7) options. Some of the courses (those run in conjunction with Leeds Beckett & Newman University) are externally validated and carry formal course credits, some do not. All delegates who successfully complete a course will receive a GFTU certificate suitable for framing. In order to help you find the right course for you, this brochure is colour coded. Yellow tabs denote Foundation Skills: These are entry level (1-3) standard, which seek to communicate essential knowledge and skills, which are geared towards practical outcomes and the ability to apply that learning in everyday situations. These courses are not geared towards specific occupations or industrial sectors. Red tabs denote Developing Skills: These are geared towards Levels 1-3 (roughly GCSE – A Level / Apprenticeship / NVQ equivalent) and concentrate upon conveying a good understanding of the subject to hand; and the ability to gain and apply a range of skills, knowledge and understanding of ideas, processes or themes at a detailed level. This section is aimed particularly designed for the skilling of Reps to be able to organise and represent trade union members in the workplace. Green tabs denote Advanced Skills: Geared towards the equivalent of Levels 4-7 of national qualifications (and equating to Higher Apprenticeship & NVQ levels to degree and graduate level, and postgraduate study). These are aimed towards experienced Reps, trade union officials and managers and provide the opportunity for professional development, the communication of high level knowledge in the fields of work and study, and the framework for the development of original and critical thinking.

Access to Learning Everyone has a right to learning. ‘Disability’ only becomes a problem when learners have to face inaccessible courses, classrooms and institutions. GFTU’s focus is, wherever possible, to remove barriers to education; this includes the ongoing development of inclusive teaching and learning strategies. This includes access to teaching rooms and Quorn Grange Hotel facilities, specific accommodation designated car parking spaces; the production of course materials in specific formats (Braille / large print / coloured papers & overlays); assistive technologies; and the modification or adaption of equipment (hand held, illuminated magnifiers etc) and the provision of hearing induction loops. Please do advise us, on application for a course, about your requirements. requirements (and for guide dogs and registered carers);

Functional Skills The Core Building Blocks of the Labour Movement Regardless of your experiences at school, Functional Skills are the essential skills needed for English, Maths, and ICT in order for trade unionists to fully participate in life, learning and meaningful work. They form the building blocks that enable learning and all else flows from them. They are also a vital part of the Labour Movement’s armoury – upskilling its members and opening up for them new horizons, skills and aptitudes. As a consequence, the GFTU offers the following entry level courses for its affiliates in partnership with Northern College and TERC, in order to provide a competency in English, Maths and ICT skills.

Skilling and Organising Workplace Reps A union’s Workplace Representatives (or Shop Stewards) are its backbone, and the first line of contact between the union and its members. Having well-trained, well-educated and highly motivated Reps dramatically strengthens the power, influence and efficacy of a union. It makes organising and recruitment possible, while at the same time permitting Reps to develop their own skills and interests – upskilling themselves while adding value to the union. The GFTU has, therefore, chosen to put Reps training and education as one of the cornerstones of its 2018-19 programme.

The Unions, Data Protection & Social Media Social media is here to stay Facebook, Twitter, Watsapp, Instagram, Linkedin and a host of other platforms profoundly influence our lives, our relationships, and the way in which trade unions communicate with their members and organise. Indeed, these particular social media websites have more than 100,000,000 registered users. Of course there are both opportunities and dangers in participating in social media, as something which was intended as personal relationship network, based around social sharing, has become a conduit for ideas, advertising, polemics and politics. Trade unionist need to be aware of the rise of cyberbullying, online harassment and ‘trolling’. Employers are also becoming increasingly adept at monitoring their employees’ social media accounts, often targeting union Reps and bringing disciplinary actions against them on the grounds that ‘private’ statements or posts have brought their organisation into disrepute. At the same time, Trade Unions can benefit greatly – in terms of organising campaigns and recruitment – from the interconnectedness of members, groups, NGOs, advocacy groups and political parties. Social media is another tool – and we all know how to use and wield it properly. These GFTU courses are there to show you how.
