The bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is about to get a little busier…with news that Google is building a new submarine cable, linking the US east coast with Europe. The 6,400km Dunant four fiber-pair cable system, named after Nobel peace prize winner Henri Dunant, will cross from Virginia Beach in the USA to the French Atlantic coast. It is expected to become available in late 2020. TE SubCom will build the system, the fourth that Google has invested in after the Havfrue, HK-G and JGA-S cables, as part of a consortium. More details on page 10. California’s sheriff department has staged its 25 th annual gun destruction event at the Gerdau steel mill in Ranch Cucamonga. Over the last 23 years, authorities have destroyed around 170,000 weapons, which recycles them for use in the production of rebar. The full story is on page 14.
