Discovering Luxembourg

The primary language taught in precoce is Luxembourgish. However, the precoces accept children off all nationalities and language backgrounds and can assist children with their integration to Luxembourgish. There is no tuition for the public precoce. The other option for nursery school is the maternelles. These are typically privately owned and the primary language taught there is French. There are also several maternelles that teach in English as well. Local School System Ecole Primaires (Primary School) is for children ages 6-11. Local schools are normally taught in Luxembourgish, German, and French, with English as a foreign language started in about 6th grade, depending on the school. By design, there is not a formal rating system for the local schools because the intent is to equalize quality of education in all quarters/communes of Luxembourg. Typically, German is the first language the children will learn to read and write in their first year; French and Luxembourgish grammar in their second year. By age 8, they will be learning 3 languages. Proficiency in all three languages is required to graduate from public school. At age twelve, following primary school, students can choose between either general or technical education at a “Lycee” and complete their studies with examinations. The general education prepares students for higher education with two divisions, lower and upper. Technical education has three cycles; the first allows students to learn a trade, the second leads to an aptitude certificate and the third includes technical instruction in preparation for a university course. Some schools offer both “classique” and “technique” and others offer an International Baccalaureate program.
